No first gear, or reverse on '52 Super M

I was out using my Super M today and with no warning the tranny decided to lock me out of first gear and reverse. Something was preventing the shifter from sliding over far enough to get first and reverse. All the other gears worked fine with no unusual sounds. I decided to keep working with the machine, and about a 1/2 hour later first gear and reverse came back, and I had no other problems the rest of the day. Should I be concerned that I have shift linkage problems, or was my SM just being a little tempermental today?

A combination of all posts so far hits what is going on right on the head. My guess is that you came out of reverse (or 1st) in a hurry and “rounded” the corner headed for another gear. The shift lever came around the corner and the shifting rail in the transmission continued past the neutral position just far enough to block the shift lever from being able to get back into the slot. As you worked the tractor, vibration or what ever forces assisted the lever back to the true aligned neutral position.

My suggestion is try to make sure that you do a square corner whenever you shift making sure that you stop in the neutral position assuring the rail has stopped before moving sideways to another rail. If you still have problems, you will need to check the sift lever to make sure it is fat and square, and if you still have problems, pull the cover and replace the balls and springs that prevent the rails from moving.

ATW: Your problem is the shifting rail for 1st and reverse. Those will have detent balls to hold in position, probably those balls and the shift rail are getting worn. I rather doubt the end of your shift lever is worn, or it would have gone over for 1st and reverse gear. That rail can't move very far before 1st or reverse would be grinding or engaged. Had 1st or reverse been engaged you certainly would not have used the other gears.

sounds like the shifting rail for 1st/Rev is getting loose and got out of alignment.
