You guys got me scratchin' my head now.

Anybody got a scan of a large chassis final drive out of an IT manual (not the tranny or rear end, but the final drive)?

Thanks,

Allan

Allen question found an old M down along the mighty Miss ducking hunting. Does not run old boy claims it has an M&W kit in trans how do you find out if true and what do I look for to make sure those extra gears are in there.

Quit scratchin'. I can scan one in later this week if you really need one, but I stripped my 1486 rear end (rear split) until there was only the PTO in it. There are no, repeat NO planetary gears in a 1486. It is a pinion/bull gear drive design like smaller older IH tractors. According to IT manual 1566 and 1586 do have the planetary gears.

Hi Capt'

That's what they tell me.....

First I'm told that it is okay for a 310 to smoke and now this!! Don't know how much more of this bad news I can stand 'cause I've been carrying these red guys in pretty high esteem 'til now.

I think I'm gonna have to go green! 'Course if I did that, someone would probably come along and tell me that they now have more than two cylinders!

Geeze! When will it ever end?! :>)

Thanks for your help,

Allan

Allan, where ya been hiding? Those green Olivers have had 6 cylinders for quite some time now.

Hi ya Rusty,

Oliver? Oliver?? Did you say Oliver???

You don't understand. I live in an area where people can see what kind of tractors I have. A guy has gotta keep somewhat of an air of sensibility about him. :>)

Allan: You really should get an Oliver. Super 77 or 88 diesel. Even I wear an Oliver baseball cap, and it sure keeps the green guys lined up and in order. My next tractor will be an Oliver.

On the 06, 56 and 66 tractors 7 to 14, I have seen the inside, guys aren't pulling your leg.

Hi Hugh,

No, I know that they aren't yankin' me around. I was just plain mistaken on that little bit of verbalization.

Like Cowman says, don't believe what ya hear, believe what ya see.

No doubt the Olivers are good tractors; just never been around 'em is all.

I've just got two more to go, this 966 I'm workin' on and a 766D and then that will get me back to where I left off in March of 1983 in the tractor department. :>)

(Well, I might sneak in a JD 60 under a F-10 if the wife doesn't take notice)

Onwards and upwards, I say,

Allan

Allen,

Now you’ve got me scratchin’ my head!

Seems to me you just fixed up your H with live hydraulics and said it was too much fun. Did some space alien get a hold of you and you suddenly grew an extra arm to run all those hand controls, or are you going to put in foot pedals for the loader hydraulics? I bleed nothing but red, so I guess I’m just dense as to why someone would put a hand clutch under a loader.

captain: I guess I have to scratch my head at the action of a lot of you guys. I can not understand why anyone would want a loader on an American built row crop tractor. To start with probably one of the poorest loader tractors ever, and what a waste on the very best draft tractors ever.

We were just as bad at home, my dad started with loader on the H back in 51, then 300. I later put a 2000 loader on the 560. In 1972 I needed a second loader. I bought a Case 1737 Uniloader, two years later I bought a second Case Uniloader. Within 6 months the 2000 loader was removed from 560 forever, and 560 returned to what it did best drawbar work. Those little 40 hp skid loaders will run circles around a farm tractor loader, I don't care how big the tractor is.

Hugh,

Good point about the skid loaders, they definitely are a handy machine and I wish I had enough work to do with one to justify owning one.

Anyway, when I was growing up my dad had an F-12, a B and an M. The loader was on the F-12. As soon as he got the 560, he put a loader (and the power steering) on the M. I guess he was just trying to utilize the tractors he had as much as possible and keep investment to a minimum. I think it comes from having to live through the “dirty 30’s” and having to get by with as little as possible.

captain: I know what your saying. When I bought the skid loaders I was aproaching 200 head of holsteins. 120 mature cows at one location and 80 replacments at another location. Both barns had been designed around front end loader doing cleaning, feeding, etc. Two years after i bought the first one I realized I had become so dependant on it I couldn't afford a breakdown, not even for a day. Those little loaders turned about 1000 hours per year each. More than once we ferried one back and forth twice a day to get everything fed. Problem is after you get one of those little loaders, you crowd everything closer and put more cattle in. Soon you don't have room for a tractor to operate.

My dad always preached save the skid loader, do what you can with the 560. I always responded save the 560. In 1975 a new skid loader was $8,000. A new 50 hp tractor with loader would have been pushing $16,000. Repairs on those little loaders were a fraction of the cost of a loader tractor. I see guys doing loader work in livestock operations and that IPTO and 3 point haven't been used in years. I'll bet you can buy a skid steer for little more than the price of a IPTO and 3 point.

You going green? The world must be comin" to an end. Then I guess Oliver is not a bad tractor. Is there any other green, oh yea, the old Massey"s were green.

Allan,
Was just sitting here thinkin" ( I know, that is dangerous), but to me tractors are kinda like women, most all look good, but we all have our favorites. I like all tractors, but I have a lot of fun with this. Kind alike baseball, I am not really a fan of baseball, but I kinda follow the St. Louis Cards, but if I get around a Cub fan, I tease them just to be honery. Don"t really care who wins or who looses, ever since the strike years ago, it kinda took the fun of baseball out for me.

Hi NC,

Well, in thinking back, when the guy told me this they were fairly new models. He probably had never been inside one his own self.

Who knows,

Okay,

Thanks Casey.

The reason I'm all fired up about this is that the guy who told me about those pinions in the final drives of the larger chassis is just a "killer" IH mech.

I just can't imagine him lying to me about something so trivial.

Allan
