Hi All,

Just never had much use for fluid when I lived down on the flat. I mean who needs the silly stuff anyway?

Then, I moves up here in the darned hills. So darned pretty and all (yeah, you just wait til winter, sucker!)

I tell ya, this place is nothin but pure, uncut, USDA-inspected vertical!!.

Anyway long story short, I've been fightin' this darned driveway for 4 or 5 years now. Little H was totally useless; it was all it could do to pull itself out of this yard.

I know you can't really tell from the picture, but this drive is STEEP! Last spring, I had the local tire co. come out here and pump the little tires full of calcium.

Darned little tractor thinks it is a bloody badger now! Digs like a hound after a rabbit. It pushes and levels with an 8' bucketful of gravel going uphill!

I'm totally sold on fluid; for this kind of real estate, anyway.

Ya'll have a good evening,

Allan

Appreciating this discussion. My 240U loader has large fat tires (sorry, don't have the size handy & tractor is home), FLUID, and one rim is rusting. One has more fluid than the other, and dishing them in - especially on the heavier one - took a good 45 minutes to flip it around only, not to rehang on the hub. There are some cracks here and there in the sidewalls and I have decided I am seeing some seepage, yet the tires seem more or less to be holding pressure. (Is that possible?) What can I do to slow down rusting rims? Thanks, guys.

PS Scotty, here in NH I can related to your geography. My lot has hills that I can only manage in 2nd or 1st.

Hi Allan, Real nice picture, looks a little like my driveway in Vt! Do you have any idea how fast you can get going on a sled in 800 ft going down that incline? It takes your breath away!

Mornin' Scotty,

This darned picture just simply does not show the angle of this drive.

In the middle of summer, dry as a bone, this drive is a bugger to even WALK down. Guess this is why I own a bunch of 4x4s. :>)

I think what you just said is that there is a place for everything. I live in the flatland and I choose not to use it because I can get by without. But as you (and others) have pointed out so well is that there is a place for it.

captain: No question fluid or liquid weight has its place. Depends on the type of work, topography and soil type.

I see two benefits to liquid weight small tractors, and tractors doing a lot of hauling on hard roads.

Local tire guy tells me chloride is almost an item of the past. less than 2% of new tractors tires are being filled with chloride. Farmers are finding more rubber on the ground is the answer. 4x4, duals and 46" rims all do this. My opinion the smart guys are the ones going articulated and duals. The sooner farmers demand a 100 hp articulated tractor the better off he'll be.

Allen,

If you liked the fluid, try adding chains, front and rear. You might still have to lift the bucket a little to get it to steer on ice.

Allan, that sure is purty looking country. As far as fluid in tires, I have heard of some using wind shield washer fluid. Has to get pretty cold for that to freeze. There is some thing else you can put in tires that will not eat rims, but I can`t think of it. My 2cents Boyd

The problem is all the alternatives to calcium only weigh about 60 percent what calcium weighs. That 400 lbs. makes a huge difference.

I don't like the down side of fluid either ie- rusting rims, tire wear, etc., but around here either you have weights stacked so wide the tractor won't fit through the shed door or you run fluid. You bet 1,000 lbs. +/- in those H tires is gonna make a huge difference! 13.6x38's on my DC will hold over 1,200 lbs. 20.8x38... approx. 3,000 lbs. on our 1270 Case. All but one of our tractors has max. fluid and the remaining one should too. Glenn F.

Glenn,

I've got two full sets of weights on 'er also; maybe it is a combination of the two, who knows.

And, don't you think, tho, if a guy takes the time to service those valve stems every half a dozen years or so that the "rusting rims" thing won't happen?

I'm awfully careful about flushing any loose fluid off the tractor too.

Allan

Yes I'm sure most of the rusted rims are due to neglect. It is plain to see when a problem is developing. Glenn
