I just bought a used manifold for my M, and it is in pretty fair condition but I wanted to know what should I do to get the most life out of it. Any tricks? Also is it ok to park my tractor on a dirt floor in the barn or should I put down some stone or something?

Last question how do I tell for sure if I have calcium in my tires without removing them? THank you for you help.

There is a small hole in the exhaust part of some if not all M manifolds. This is to let water out if the engine sets out in rain, snow, etc. Making sure this hole is open will help extend the life of it.

If you park the tractor for long periods of time, make sure that they don’t go flat. Flat tires that set for a long time stress the cords in the tire leading to breaks in the sidewalls. It doesn’t matter if they are on dirt or something else. The only time I’d worry about covering the floor is if the tractor you have is a show tractor and you want to keep it as clean and dust free as possible. Then get a large zip-lock bag to drive it in! :>)

All my tractors sit on dirt/gravel floors all the time doesn't hurt a thing. as far as checking for fluid in the tires park it with the valve stem at the bottom and push in the core a moment, if water comes out they are filled if not no fluid.

Well, looks like you have your answers...but wanted to add that if your tractor is stored inside that will go a long way towards saving that manifold. Don't bother painting it or anything...nothing will stick to the upper parts, just burns off. Like any exhaust component, it will benefit from being used long enough to heat up and burn out any condensation. I guess you could fatten up the fuel mixture to coat that manifold (and your plugs, etc) with more unburned fuel, but you will find that you spend more money on fuel and other parts, so that really isn't an option. If the manifold you bought is a nice solid one it will last you many years and you will not be changing it again until you either have much less hair or a lot more gray. well heck, if you own old tractors I guess that might not be all that long but you get my drift.

By the way, been parking my stuff on a dirt floor since I was 5 years old and my only tractor was a Huffy 5 horse. Never saw any huge problems except for it is easier to lose nails/etc in a dirt floor and thus spend a bit more time plugging tires. Since I bought a wheeled magnet thingy I have avoided those problems for the most part.

Have fun!
