If the “shifter lever” is getting stuck then there is a problem with the balls and springs that act as the “detent” to hold the shift rails from moving or in the pivot mechanism in the shift lever tower.

If it is getting stuck in a gear (and the shift lever still moves) this is the common problem. It can be cured by some or all of the following. Take out the shift lever and build up (by welding) the rectangle at the bottom. It should have fairly square edges but is more than likely rounded after many years of use. Try to change your shifting habit from reverse to 4th to a square pattern making sure you stop in the neutral position on one rail before you move the lever sideways to another rail. Most people “round” the corners in a U shape rather than an H shape. If both of these don’t fix it, pull the cover and replace the springs and balls that hold the sift rails from moving.

I've never had it happen to me, but the big dogs tell me that the shifter shaft will wear the knob off the bottom and needs to be built up and ground back down.

Local CIH shop should have a jig or whatever to get that ground down to the proper size after it is built up.
