I think CNKS and Bob M have the misconseption
that if a SM is equiped with a belley pump the
battery is always under gas tank. Not so,from
tractor serial numbers I posted and after IH or customer had the option of live hydraulic or belley pump. After those serial # tractors were equiped with battery under seat,on off switch in amp box, belt pulley engage rod to left side, choke
rod little different and other small changes even
if it came with a belley pump.

I don't have an SM parts book but I do have one for a SH. They did not come with belly pumps after 19233 according to the parts book; I assume the SM would be the same after the SM serial number break. I was not aware that the belly pump was available after the serial number break. Are you SURE about that?? However, I am not sure that any serial number break is etched in stone, as there could have been a few hybrids produced until the parts supply was used up that were equipped as you indicated. I don't know that the customer had the option, though. Hydraulics were optional, whether a belly pump or live. So there could have been SH's and SM's produced with the battery under the seat and no hydraulics shortly after the serial break. Unless studied closely, one might assume that there was a belly pump, if no live pump was installed. Also, the torque tubes were different -- at least on the SH the starter is mounted in a different place, and it was not drilled for the belly pump hoses. IH would have had to keep making the old torque tubes -- not likely, but they could have been used until used up.

You are right about SH but on SM the only major
difference in clutch housing was going to a 3 bolt starter mounting, belley pump still worked in housing. I have actually saw late SM with belley pump.IH made special bracket that bolted on rear gas tank support which placed choke, starter and
belt pulley gear box rods in same place they would be on live hydraulic reservoir. For the gasoline , rod support # 358265R1 was used for belley pump equiped tractors F-28175 up.

If your tractor has the hydraulic reservoir under the gas tank, then you have to have the battery under the seat, as you can't have both the battery box and the reservoir under the gas tank. If the battery is under the gas tank and you want the tractor to be correct, then use the seat that does not sit on top of the battery box.

Depends on whether the tractor has live hydraulics. If yes, the seat mounts on top of the battery box.
