Look in the archives for methods on removing the pump shaft female coupling (the slotted interface on the pump that the coupling - the bar with the sleeves that goes between the trans and the pump - fits into). The Blue Ribbon and I&T manuals talk about drifting the coupling out after locking the pump gears with 1/8" flat stock. I think this is a mistake. When I tried it I chipped the female coupling. There are posts in the archives about hooking up an pneumatic impact wrench to a made-up male fitting. Put the male fitting into the female coupler with the unit still attached to the reservoir and full of oil and the resistance of the oil will give enough back pressure to spin off the female coupling. I haven't tried it but it sounds less risky than the drifting method.

Careful while dropping the pump. I've seen posts talking about using lengths of allthread to lower it down. The thing is _heavy_ but I would imagine the allthread method would take forever. I used a rolling jack and blocks of wood. Safer and smarter still would be to have an assistant to help with the balancing as it comes down.
