656 Hydrostatic

I just purchased a 656 Hydrostatic which seems to have a problem with the auxillary hydraulic system. I was told that it blew a hydraulic line on the "Fast Attach" loader, the owner had someone replace the line and return the tractor, not used since then. Any time the powersteering is turned or the loader is acutated there is a great deal of whining/light grinding, etc. and the loader just jumps like the fluid is pulsating. Is there anyway to purge this system or is the pump bad?
Thanks!

From my experience I would change the Hydro filter on the right side. It is a round cover about 7-8 inches in diameter. It corrected a jeerky power steering for me.

Run some oil into a bucket from your remote outlets. If it is foamy, you are sucking air and you will need to find the suction leak. If it is not foamy, you are likely running over relief and it may be hunting or cavitation is ocurring. Typically you cannot hear the filter bypassing as the bypass valve opens at Delta P of around 10-15 psi. Usually, whining and jumping pumps are a sign of areation or cavitation. aeration...suction leak, cavitation...restricted suction.

Motor needs to be running!! in reply to Roy Robertson, 11-22-2004 14:37:44
When you check the oil level in a hydro tractor, the tractor needs to be running around 1600 rpm and the shift handles in neutral. Otherwise your oil mark on the dipstick is worthless (incorrect level).

Your manual will tell you this.

Don't know about the hydro's but I had a similiar problem with my 656. My problem was where the oil return goes from the 2pt valving it goes down between the bull gears on it's way back to the pump. the lines are steel execpt for at the bull gears there is a piece of hose about 6 or7 in long with clamps on it. My hose had failed and it was sucking air. I fixed mine through the Pto hole. I had to tape every 1/4 in extension I had together to tighten the clamps. This hose is normally submerged in oil, but would vortex to air real soon. Might be something for you to check

I purchased a 544 hydro that had some of the same symptoms. I replaced ALL fluids in the tractor. I beleive the hytran res should hold 20 gallons. I always recommend changing all fluids and filter. I also had to make sure all the air got out of the lines for the loader and steering by fully etending and retracting all cylinders. Steering fully right then left. I also had a few loose fittings that were letting air get back in the lines. You also need to clean the relief screen as well. Get a manual and follow the procedures. Hydro's are a little whinny it seams. I myself am gonna wait for my full opinions on hydros till after i see how it holds up to feild tillage. Other weise she will be a BALING TRACTOR

Roy,

Sounds like the hydraulic filter is plugged to me; at least that's where I'd check first. That screamin' you are hearing is the bypassing going on.

Also, make darned sure that the fluid level us up to par.

HTH,

Allan

Fluid level is overfull. Waiting on manuals. The only filter I changed is one on the left side that looks like a regular oil filter. I noticed a housing on the right side that is below the brake pedals that said something about hydraulics but a lot of the writing is gone, filter?

Roy,

I think you are working on the tranny filter (I think, don't own a hydro).

The hydraulic filter is like you say, on the right side under a plate held by 6 capscrews.

Roy,

Just reread your post. Gotta be low on oil (especially if someone blew a line and didn't fill 'er up again).

Thanks for the help. Encouraging that it may not be the pump!

Roy,

You said the loader jumps and 'pulsates'. That really sounds like the pump is "trying" and just doesn't have enough volume to do it's job.
