Troubles with charging system on my H

I did the charging system test for a six volt system with magneto and based on that test it was suppose to be the voltage regulator. I purchase a regulator and installed and polorized the regulator. When the tractor starts up the amp meter shows a charge. When I ground out the mag to shut off the tractor. the meter Amp meter still shows a charge and them after time the battery goes dead. Any idea what I need to do to fix this??

I would appreciate your help.

Dave

You didn't mention any switch other than the mag grounding. Magneto systems require some kind of separate switch for the battery system. They are two independent systems.

Also, as other post said, your ammeter is wired backwards.

The meter is changing? Or is it always in the same place showing a charge?
Do you have the battery in correct? Positive terminal to ground - assuming original setup.
Are you sure it's a regulator or a cut out? Does your "light switch" have 3 or 4 positions? What does the meter do if you disconnect the battery when it's not running? Are you sure it's a mag and not a distriutor and coil?

Yup I have my H in set up with a positive ground and voltage regulator. I do not have a light switch at this time (no lights0. I did not check To see what happens if I pull a battery cable. I will try that tomorrow. And it is definately has a magneto.
Looks like I need to pull a cable. When the cable is removed, I'm assuming the amp meter will go back to neutral. What would be my next step?

Dave - From your description it sounds like there’s a couple things going on:

1 – The ammeter is connected backward since it indicates charge (deflects to the right) with the engine stopped. Correct by swapping the wires at both ammeter terminals.

2 – An ammeter indication after the engine stops says either the regulator base is not grounded, the wiring between the regulator and generator is wrong, or the regulator itself is faulty (it’s cutout relay is sticking closed).

I’d reverse the ammeter connections, clean up the regulator ground and double check the wiring. Then if it still does not charge, post back and we’ll go from there...

Where is the light switch? My mind's a little blank at this moment, but isn't the ammeter right above the light switch in that oval box? If the switch is gone, hasn't somebody been at the wiring? I don't believe there is any way the ammeter can show positive deflection unless there are amps moving in that direction. Sounds to me like the wires are backwards and who knows what else.

Do you have this diagram or equivalent?

H magneto with reg

When did it last work? Did you buy it this way?

Do you have a simple voltmeter? Pull the neg battery cable. Check the voltage between the cable and the batt. Should be 0. Check ohms between cable and ground. Should be 0. (not 100% sure about that, becuase of the way the reg is hooked in.) What test procedure did you refer to? Have you verified that the generator will produce the 7 or so volts required? Check the voltage at the gen terminal on the regulator when the engine is running. The wiring is pretty simple. The regulator is primarily a swithch to connect the generator and battery when the generator is producing a higher voltage than the battery

If there is no light switch, what about the push pull switch underneath? The role of this switch changed from in-closed to ground the mag, to out-closed to put voltage to coil ignition. If someone worked on this who was not aware of the change, they might have wired this to the ammeter. (Switch would have had to change too. Maybe you have the wrong one?) There should not be ANY connection between this switch and the charging system

Also, with a regulator, it won't charge until the rpm is up enough that the generator is putting out a little more than 6 volts. I've forgotten the precise numbers.

I'm working from memory here. My experience has been with an older one with the cut out and a 52 with regulator and battery ignition. Your's is between those. It's been about a year since I worked on mine. Anybody out there who thinks I'm saying something totally wrong, jump in, I probably am :)
