Best Rusted Nut Penetrant/Loosener?

I bought a 1959 140 and am fixing little things on the tractor and implements. Every dadgummed bolt/nut so far has had to be cut off with a Dremel. This afternoon I bought a spray can of Castle Thrust penetrant from the Case IH parts counter. The old timer behind the counter said he uses it all the time. I tried it and while it appears to work like most penetrants, I still had to cut off more nuts. Any suggestions as to penetrants/looseners?

Really appreciate everyone's fine comments on this tuff nut subject. The comments fall into three categories and I'm going to adopt the best of those strategies:
a. Use some of the better penetrants (PB Blaster, Kroil, and others).
b. Use torch heating followed by sudden cooling.
c. Start planning ahead by spraying penetrant on rusted implement nuts/bolts periodically for weeks or months ahead of the repair/replacement project date.
Many Thanks,
Bill

The suggestion about heat followed by candle or beeswax also sounds pretty good. I've got three badly rusted implements to fiddle around with over the next year. I think I'll try different strategies on each implement just for the heck of it to see which method and combination of methods work best.

The best rust penetrant I have ever used has been Liquid Wrench. Though that being said there are some nuts that simply must be heated up. I have had a modest measure of extra success by heating up the nut and bolt and then selectively shooting a stream of liquid wrench (or WD40...not that I find it to be a good rust loosener but the cooling action is all I"m after here) onto the bolt in hopes that it will cool it faster than the nut and thereby increase the differential expansion and contraction between the two pieces.

Any good solvent and a lot, a lot, of time.

I'm working on a WC Allis. The WC sat outside for years. It's been inside the shop for about 1 1/2 years. Everytime I go past the tractor I squirt every nut and bolt with WD40. So far I haven't had to cut off or drill out anything. Everything has come unbolted so far.

Bill, while I'm certainly no expert, I seem to spend way too much of my life working on rusted up junk, errrrr uhhhhh machinery! I've tried nearly every pentetrant known to man, and most are as bad or good as the next. The key to using penetrants is long term soaking. The suggestion of heating and application of candle wax, works better for me, however I find that after heating if I apply beeswax it saturates the threads better than candle wax. The crowning glory to my trilogy of rusted parts removal, is the impact wrench. Best case scenario would be, soak with penetrant, preferably non flamable, allow to soak as long as possible. Heat with a torch, apply beeswax, and after several heating and cooling cycles, sic an impact wrench on that puppy. I'll bet a wire wheel will make most of them bolts re-usable. Good luck

I have tried Gibbs, PB Blaster, WD-40, 3in one, oil, kerosene, deisel fuel, cussin and swearing.
Heat em up is the best way!

An old feller told me to heat it and stick a candle to it and let melt around the threads. I have used this method and seems to work when penetrating oil wont. Good luck Bill

I would have to agree with Rusty on the torch.
We used to have a saying with a torch it will come or bleed. Never had much luck with penetrating oil. Hal

Recommened to me was the bran made by BG products. I have never used yet but the local garage swears it will out perform PB Blaster.

everyone has their own snake oil they use to loosen bolts. As old said, a good old hot wrench always works great. I have found some stuuf from 1st AYD corp that seams to be working real good, have not had good luck with PB blaster. have had good luck with Kroil, until the 1st AYD stuff, was the best I had found. Patience is also a very good product to use.

I have tried just about all of them, including the highly recommended PB Blaster. Some of the time any of them will work, some of the time none of them will work. The best way is to heat it up cherry red with a torch, and even that is not always guaranteed. Removing a stuck, rusted nut or bolt is just one of those things you need to experiment with, eventually you will stumble across a method that works.

I use "Aerokroil or Kroil, made by Kano Labratories, they have a web site where you can order direct. (www.Kanolabratories.com) This is the best I've seen for loosening things up. They have several other products, but I have never used anything else.

Best thing I have found is a good old hot wrench. Or in other words a tourch and heat them up to red hot and let them cool.

I agree with you Old, but I douse them with cold water, the sudden expansion/contraction breaks the rust and they ususally turn off easily...Mike in Exeter Ontario
