I"ve been looking at a 340 - looks like a nice tractor - but needs a hitch. I have one off a 460, will it bolt up???

Thanks
Dave

Look on ebay for 340 or 460 farmall and you will find a manual on 340 farmall and 340 & 460 International fast hitch tractors. The title doesn't mention the Farmall 460 fast hitch. So maybe they are not compatible. You might want to buy the manual as a first step.

according to the parts book atleast some of the part number match, but there are many variations of the same hitch, ie; Farmall, Utility, High utility

Gibby: I'm not sure but I do think it will fit. When these tractors were new 240 replaced the 230 and 560 replaced the 450. That left the 340 and 460 replacing the 350. Two tractors 340 just a bit smaller than 350 and 460 a bit larger. Yes I do know one is 4 cylinder and other 6. I believe rear chassis is same. Some will argue, that since Farmall 340 uses same configuration as utility rear chassis will be different from Farmall 460. I don't buy that. This same discussion came up awhile back about 300. I say the only difference between Farmall and Utility rear chassis is the top cover. How much of that hitch bolts to top cover?

Here is what I do know 340 and 460 use the same rear axle and wheel. I think I would get out some instruments and do a bit of measuring before I walked away from this one. Get a parts book and cross reference the parts of both.

Not saying I'm right, but I'm more comfortable with yes than no.

Sure they are different tractors but I think you will find the rear frames are similar if not identical. Bear in mind, however, I own neither model.

You need to take some measurement, check casting numbers, or spend some time reading parts books.

Given the comments, I'm gong to try it. Worse case I'll have to put a after market hitch on it.

Thanks
Dave

Gibby: I think there one little detail you may have to tinker with. Those hitches from that series of tractor were draft controled. You can use it without the draft control, on an ordinary double action control valve. The draft control had a linkage running from hitch rockshaft to control valve. Some of these had cable control while others had a linkage like mini ty rod system. The control valve is also different.

On the earlier post this is what I based my reasoning on. 30 years ago I needed transmission parts for my Farmall 300. By this time I was doing most of my farming with 560, 656 and 1066, and 300 was 4th tractor on pecking order. IH partsman priced out parts I needed for 300. I asked if there was a less expensive way. He said, " I know where there is a Farmall 300 rear chassis, with all gears, axles, IPTO and fast hitch, and also a 300 Utility with TA tube and no hitch or pto. They will each cost you about the same and you will have a future parts supply. He further advised that I could utilize every thing from the Utility except the axles, pedals and transmission cover. Every thing else of value is the same." I chose the Farmall because of axles, but must admit the TA sounded attractive.
