Hey all. I have not had a great last 24 hours. Tore apart the Super M engine, and my highs and lows since buying this tractor in September are going to tear me apart. Ever get the feeling things are going too good to be true and things don't go this easy until something goes drastically wrong? Yeh... 1.) I have a M&W crank in the engine, and I forgot to write down the parts number on it, but I would like to get it identified. Looks like M&W rods, too, but it does have IH Firecrators. Quite the package at its prime. 2.) In removing the rod from the crank, the two pieces holding it to the crank were together tightly, I could not pry them apart. At least, until I let it go to try to think of another way to get it out, and landed on my face. Not a pleasant experience AT ALL. Landed on my right cheek and upper teeth, causing pain and excessive bleeding and foul language from the mouth. 3.) All of the pistons and rods came out without a wimper of resistance, except for the lesson learned in #2. Amazing to look at the engine then and see how far I went in a morning. 4.) Ate a great lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches and back to work. Boy this has been a great day. 5.) Set up the sleeve puller and the cheery picker. I pumped several times and was scared to death I was reefing on it too hard until the sleeve came launching out of the block and I just about launched a load in my shorts. Sleeve 1, out. 6.) Without a doubt a hole in that cylinder. I knew the day had been too good. What can I do now, guys? I really don't want to junk the block, but am I truly done? The hole is about 3/8" in diameter, on the carburetor side of the block. The next cylinder was fine. I've heard of repair sleeves and such, but I am yet to pull two more sleeves. I stared down in that cylinder and leaned up against the block and just about cried. I went from "the engine has clear water from the exhaust" which it did to "crack in the sleeve" which it didn't to "easy out, easy in" which wouldn't prove the case anymore and now "hole in da block." Golly, guys, you have helped me out so much, and I don't want to scrap this old girl, but what can I do to this motor? Thank you for everything you have done for me, as I am truly at a loss for my own knowledge, now. Thanks, and take care.

if you have a m+w crankshaft you must also have m+w pistons. the pin would not be in the right place with ih firecraters if you have the m+w 5 3/4" crankshaft unless someone turned 1/4" off the top of them.

Hey Tim, I know the feeling. Man I got a story for you about my Super M experience when you get some time. Anyway maybe if you can access the hole throught the water jacket cover in the side of the block. You might can clean around the hole and use some sort of epoxy putty after installing the sleeve to seal the hole. I know thats an extreme band-aid but hey just a thought. Blocks are cheap if you dont go to a parts yard. Ive sold many M blocks for $150. Maybe someone can help you out in your area. My M has a C281 from a 450 LP.

Honestly, I have not measured. I keep forgetting. I think it is safe to say that I've got 4.125 with Firecrators. I don't know if anyone would have put 4" firecraters in it??? I know it isn't over that, that's for sure. I measured I believe incorrectly and got 4", but I am pretty sure I have 4.125. I have heard that the water jacket gets mighty thin in large overbores. Thanks for the post.

I bought a super M that had a lot of motor work and was real strong. It won alot of pulls and such I had oil coming from the head gasket when I got her home and tore the head off and found 4" fire crators. Could not beleve they did not go bigger when the rebuilt. I have not had the pan off to see up there yet. YOU are saying you have fire crators in her do they have the IH insignia on the top with the little circle around it??? JON

Tim, if what I have heard is true, a hole in the cylinder of a super M is not that uncommon. I believe it has happened often enough that surely someone has developed a cure. Don't give up, that old girl will be one sweet tractor when you are done. As far as taking a rod cap square in the mouth, been there, I feel for you.

Hi Tim You may have something very rare there. I have been told that back in the day M&W made a stroker kit for the farmall M that would put out 90 HP and was still usable on the farm. Chad may be able to confirm this or maybe one of the others . I would do some measuring on those rods and crank and see if there to IH specs or if they are something special. JON

Tim, you can put in a repair sleeve if the hole dosen't go all the way through and it is toward the bottom of the cylinder. It costs about $80 to install one and I don't remember how much the sleeve costs.Sorry to hear about your troubles. Not nice when you buy something to restore and then find something like this.

Hey Rich! How have you been doing? Just out of curiousity, what are the stories of the tractors you have behind your house? I always look at them when I drive by, but I always think about them and don't arrive at any answers. hahaha. I've unhid my e-mail if you want to e-mail me. Take care, and thanks for the suggestion!
