Zenith Carb venturi question

I have a Zenith K-5 carburator that I just can"t seem to get to idle well. It is on a F-30 that has new rings complete reconditioned head new valves, guides, seats. Compression is great. I have the fuel level right according to my manual. have checked with a sight tube. This carb is clean and all jets are free. Tractor does not skip a beat above 1/4 throttle. Also is there a 0-ring around the bottom of the venturi as mine does not have one and the parts manual does"nt show one? The idle screw does seem to effect the speed but will not clean up the rough idle. I have had this apart more times than I would like to admit to! I have the valves set at .017 plugs at .020 and the points are at .013. Does anyone have any ideas to try?

Presuming everything else is set right (spark and cam timing, valve clearances, etc), sounds like it’s a chronic lean condition at idle. Most likely cause is a vacuum leak - ie. intake manifold to head, carb to manifold, worn carb throttle shaft bushings, etc.

To find the leak, with the engine idling and the choke full open spray WD-40 or play gas from an unlit propane torch on the suspect areas. The idle smooth out and speed will increase when the WD-40 or propane gets sucked into the leak.

If the above doesn’t do it, the carb idle mixture is chronically lean. If you slowly pull the choke with the engine warm and idling and find a choke setting where the idle smooths out, that’s the problem. You’ll then need to go back inside the carb and look for a partial blockage in the idle circuit, a wrong (too small) orifice someplace, a crack in a casting (unlikely), etc.

Good luck! Cause for a problem like this can sometimes be tough to locate…

Thanks for your replys- I used Either around all the gaskets and found no difference. The head and manifold have been surfaced. This is a Hysler manifold that looks to have alot larger ports than a IH manifold hope that does"nt hamper vacuam signal.
If the choke is pulled just a little it runs faster and real smooooo ooth! I have already enlarged the idle jet a couple sizes and it only helped slightly. But there is a "compensator jet" that looks to feed the gallery were the idle jet feeds from. I will remove it and try again. Maybe that jet is way to small, I suspect it is from a F-20. Thanks again!

I wonder if it could be your mag. Maybe it does not like the slow idle speed. You could try swapping the mag and carb from a known good running tractor. I don't see why these old ladies shouldn't idle down nicely. My F-20 runs well down to a really low idle.
