Well i finally got my (good running )560 that I bought from a jockey from canada running and I am pretty sure its a blowen head gasket .. Its a 560 diesel misses and blows white smoke bad Its a D-282... Just how hard is it to change head gaskets and any tips would be great.. Can I leave the manifolds on the head? I have a engine hoist so I should be ok there.. I didnt really need another project.. Thanks Jim Ward

captaink is right. Get the engine warmed up to normal operating temp. and see if it still smokes. One thing I've done is to start it up cold and put your fingers on the exhaust manifold port of each cyl. as it warms ups. If one (or more) of them does not warm up as fast as the others it could be weak or dead. Helps identify which cyl. is the problem.
Also if your gasket is blown, it's likely the head is cracked too. 560Ds were notorious for cracked heads. Often times they run fine until the head is removed only to find it's cracked. I've been there and done that (and rebuilt the engine). I have an IH parts catalogue. If you need the breakdown I could copy & fax you the appropriate pix. I hope your luck is better than mine.

As I posted last night, white smoke from a 560 is not uncommon upon start up and should clear in a couple minutes as the engine warms up. This is especially true if you don�t hold the glow plugs long enough, or your compression is low. Missing could be caused by a bad glow plug (so could the white smoke) and should go away after the engine runs for 5 to 7 minutes.

Are you getting bubbles in the radiator or does the exhaust have a �sweet� smell to it like burning anti-freeze? If either is true then the head gasket is blown or you have a bad crack in the head or cylinder wall.

If you are positive it is the head gasket it is not a terribly difficult job. To me the most frustrating part of doing a head gasket is the fuel tank. I usually try to burn off almost all the fuel then drain it and remove the tank and supporting bracket. I�ve also propped up the tank, but then it can get in your way. I�m thinking that you should be able to leave the manifolds on the head, but I would suggest taking a good look at the valves after you have the head off. They should almost be level with the deck of the head itself. If not, I would suggest taking it to a shop and having the seats replaced and the head brought back up to spec. You will be amazed at how much easier that old girl will start! Check the piston to cylinder clearance and ring grove to see how bad the bottom end is worn, at least then you will know what you have.

Jim hoist not much good with that tank on there. You don't have to remove the tank but do have to take the 4 1/2" srews out of the saddle to lift the front of the tank. I would take the manifold off. Make sure you check the sleves for crakes.
