Several weeks ago I asked about HVLP paint guns. El Toro responded that I could buy one at Northern Tools. My question is--What size compressor will I need for this gun?

You might also look into the HVLP rigs that include the compressor. It is actually a fan that feeds air through a 1-1/2" plastic hose to the gun. I was spraying lacquer with a cheap one ($100) several years ago and it did a great job. Good finish, light overspray, and with the fan, there is no chance of water in the air because it is not really compressed.

Hi Charles, I found the owner's manual on my compressor and it is rated at 5.5 CFM. So you can see why you need a large output compressor.

My compressor uses 240 volts too.
Home Depot in my area rents tools and that includes air compressors. I use my old spray gun
for applying primer and Primeez surfacer. The compressor handles it without any problems. Hal

PS: It's Sears compressor.

Sears has a 33 gallon compressor on sale. Six hp. They say it is rated at 8.6 scfm at 40 psi and 8.6 at 90 psi. Does this sound okay? Next size up is 240volt, 60 gallon tank.

Yes, the Chrysler has Fluid Drive! Learned to drive it on county roads, mud.

Hi Charles, I think that compressor will work ok.
I've been looking at some of Sears' compressors
too. You can tell them what you're going to use it for and if doesn't do the job go back and complain. They try to please the customer.

Since Kmart owns Sears now you may be able to get one from Kmart. Hal

Thank you for your response. Seems like there are some really nice tractor people that know a lot about the subject on this website. This tractor belonged to my grandfather, father and now me so that is the reason it is so special.

Also, restored the '47 Chrysler that belonged to my grandparents. I learned to drive in this car. Once again, thank you!

Hi Charles, Northern has compressors that would provide enough air. If you need the item numbers
send me another posting.

I bet that old Chrysler has the fluid drive. My late brother and I bought a new Dodge in 1949 with fluid drive sure was a nice car.

To paint something like a big farm tractor you need a good compressor. Hal

Hi Charles, It's too cold to paint now, I'm just
kidding. To answer your question those HVLP guns consume about 7 to 9 CFM. My compressor is 32 years old and it's a 3hp and it has a hard time
keeping up with enough air. Northern has a spray gun kit with 2 guns and a regulator. The item number is 156414-1502 for $119.00.

I make out with my compressor that I have by not been filling the paint cup full. My arms get tired anymore, so I take a break to refill the cup and that gives the compressor a chance to build up pressure. The cup on the large gun holds 1000cc that is just over a quart
and it gets heavy until you use up the paint. These guns cut way down on the overspray, so they save money by not wasting paint. Paint is very expensive. Hal

If I were you and you are planning on to do a lot of painting I would ask a paint store as to what size compressor you'll be requiring. You need to maintain 35 to 45 lbs of pressure at the regulator on the gun.
