766 changing wheels.....

I had to move my wheels in on my 766 to better accomodate the width of my snow blower. They were full of calcium and "man" were they heavy! It took me some figurin' to move them in. I didn't dare use my big hammer. I ended up putting a chain through the wheel and around the cab mount and tightened it with a "bear-trap" or you might call it a load-binder. Every clamp moved it in about 1/2 an inch. I am dreading moving them back out next spring. Anyone got some suggestions on how to easily widen those heavy boots?

The method Hugh described is the one we've always used. Works like a charm, and is TONS easier than trying to brute-force slide those heavy wheels on the axles.

Mornin' Scruffy,

Like Loren says, you can just jack 'em right back out after the lube.

The tricky part comes if and when you ever want to change the dudes to the other bead on the rim. Those lop-sided rascals are a pain even when they are empty!

Scruffy: When you loosen wheel, have clamps down. Jack tractor so jack is taking weight. Loosen the clamps off and completely remove them. They need the threads cleaned and lubricated anyhow. then just lower jack enough to let wheel tip which ever way you want to move on axle. Rejack when wheel reaches spot on axle where you want it. Its best to use two people, one on jack and one on wheel. Depending on how far you move wheel on axle it may be best to do in two or more stages or jackings.

I have moved 20.8x38 this way full of chloride, the actual move takes little more than a minute or so. You will never regret cleaning those clamps and bolts and adding some lube. Time well spent.

A high lift jack on the end of the axle and a chain looped thru the wheel. A small jack is easier to use than a large one.

If the grease doesn't help. Take a 4 x 4 timber long enough to go from the axle to the ground at about a 45 degree angle. Run you chain through the wheel again and around the 4 x 4 at the axle. Works the same out as going to the cab mount in. Loren

Just a little grease well applied all around the axle right next to wheel-even between wheel wedge & axle as you rock wheel in at the top. Then rock, push top then bottom then top then...Not too much grease mind you or one man will slide that big wheel to Tucson.

scruffy

I had to move wheels in on my 706. When I had the clamps loose and weight off the wheel I used a long pry bar at the bottom of the wheel and just pushed on the top of the wheel and they slid right in. I did have things well lubed up too.
