ive got a 706 diesel i bought over a year ago. i love this tractor to death. anyhow, the ta works fine going from ta to direct, but going from direct to ta, it will freewheel for about ten seconds or so, then kick in hard. so i havnt been using the ta. so my question is, what goes wrong in these things. ive got an it manual, and from what i can tell theres two hydraulic clutches in there, one for direct and one for ta. could it be that the one for ta is leaking, and then filling up after a few seconds and locking in? or am i shooting the wrong way? i redid the ta on my 300 a couple years ago, so id like to try this one also, just hoping to get some info before hand. thanks
nate

The problem is in the sprag as at one time or another someone used the ta to slow a heavy load down and this is a big no no and caused the rollers to do a doubel back flip and now they have to find a spot on them to grab a hold of . If you are working it under load in the lower gears it should wokr for awhile , oh one other thing make sure that your control valve is going all the way down to the snap ring and all the way up this can also cause that to happen.

There's one hydraulic clutch pack, a sprauge clutch, one hydraulic brake pack, and two sets of gears- one gear in each set in the TA unit and the other gear in each set on the speed transmission input shaft. In direct, oil pressure is sent to the clutch pack, which locks the faster of the two gear sets to the TA input shaft. In TA, the direct drive clutch pack unlocks, and the sprauge clutch, which is a one-way clutch, similar to the ramp and rollers in your 300, does the driving. The brake pack locks up to prevent the sprauge clutch from freewheeling. My guess is that your brake pack is leaking or fried. If someone used the TA to slow down, say coming off the road with a heavy load behind them, the brake disk linings will fry right off. I would reccomend you get the guages and carfully check it out. Could just be a leak in the MCV, but probably time for a new TA.

Nate, the TA pressure circuit applies the anti-coast clutch pack only, the driving connection is supplied by the sprag clutch (overiding clutch)so you do probably have a leak in the circuit. Could leak in the clutch pack, connecting tube, or the mutiple control valve. Also check all the external linkage for adjustment & binding. This TA is a bit more difficult to rebuild, you probably should use a genuine IH service manual.
