Hello, Recently I acquired a IH 674 diesel that had not been run for quite awhile. I got it running but unfortunatly found that it is getting water in the oil. Upon checking the anti freeze I found that it basically had plain water in it for who knows how long. I figure now that the block or head or both are cracked. Anyone had any experience with these. Is the head more likely to crack than the block or vice versa. Is there any easy cure. The tractor runs well and the volume of water getting into the crankcase is not a lot, just enough to color the oil a whiteish color. Are these tractors wet sleeves or dry? Luckily I don't have much money in the tractor but it would be a handy size to have around. Thanks for any thoughts. YC

Hi, it is probably the "O" rings at the bottom of one of the sleeves that is leaking. If the engine was every overheated, the "O" rings would shrink or crack and then let coolant into the oil.

My Dad's 454 which has the 3 cyl D179 version of the D239 in a 674 had the same problem. The leak became worse when the weather was cold.

Good luck

Hi YC, I forgot to mention a good way to rule out a cracked head is to check the radiator for bubbles. On a car you could see bubbles in the
recovery tank. You never mentioned any steam from the exhaust, so your leak is probably from
a sleeve seal as some have mentioned.

Sometimes that antifreeze solution will
look as if the solution may be weak until you use a hydrometer or a View Check that tests antifreeze or the specific gravity in a battery.
Glad you didn't have a cracked head or block, Hal

The first thing I would do is to drop the oil pan like El Toro said. Buy or borrow a radiator pressurizer. Pump up the radiator to whatever pressure is normal (the radiator cap may have the pounds on it or a repair manual would have it), then look underneath the tractor and I would bet that you will see water leaking from the O-rings at the bottom of the sleeves. Then you'll know its time for new sleeve assemblies.

CEB,

Can he get the high compression pistons for that engine? Wonder if that wouldn't be a good idea, if so?

Yes it has wet sleeves and Allen is correct it A little brother to the 310/358 same engine just two cylinders short. As said remove the pan and check for leaks. Unless the head is cracked I will bet it is time for pistions and sleeves.

Mornin' YC,

Sounds like you are going thru the same headaches as I.

Let's hope it is just a liner seaping as mine was and you find nothing nasty like a crack.

Thanks, does this mean that this engine does have wet sleeves?

The D-239 in the 674 is a wet sleeve, From IT book No IH-44
" THe wet sleeves should be removed when out of round or taper exceeds .006 inch. Cylinder sleeves can be removed by bumping them from the bottom with a block of wood. Before installing new sleeves thoroughly clean counterbore at top and seal ring groove at bottom. all sleeves should be free to rotate by hand when tried in bores without seal rings"

I may have to do a top engine overhaul to because of burning oil. To kill two birds with one stone how can I increase power at the same time ? Stroking, higher compression pistons etc

YC,

Boy, I sure don't know but I'll just bet that it is. I think your engine is a four cylinder version of the 310/358.

A guy told me one time that if these engines would start and run, the chances are very high that the block and head are in good shape.

It's hard to say where the coolant leak is, but you may be able to locate any leakage from the head. Drop the oil pan and you may be able to see leakage from that area.

You can also pressurerize the radiator and
that would show any coolant leakage. If leakage is from the head, you may need to have it magnafluxed at your local machine shop. Hal
