Morning Allan,MY TRUCK IS FIXED!. After many hours of trying to find the problem I have had with this truck for about a year I finally found it. I got my book out for the carb and got my vacum gauge out and went all over that carb. I made some very minor adjustments and my problem just kept getting worse. Met my wife for lunch on Monday and it started running bad in the parking lot, wouldn't hold a steady idel, backfire and stall that kind of stuff. Much to her dismay I jumped under the hood in the reasturant parking lot while she while she tried to keep it running I was shaking wires and messing with the carb. While taking the breather off I bumped the dist. and it started running better. It had a new cap, rotor and Accell coil put on just a year ago. When I got home I pulled that coil off after setting a hour it was still very hot to the touch. New coil, cap and rotor and it is running great. That coil must have been bad since I put the motor in a year ago cause it never has ran smooth like it is now. It allways loped alot and I just thought it must be the cam I put in it. Mr. she runs now. Whooooo oooeeeee e! I thank you for all your help and advice. Even though it turned out not to be the carb you gave me a great place to start and taught me some things I didn't know about my carb.If I was in NE I would run by and take you for a ride, you wouldn't belive the difference it made. Thanks Allen
Paul

Congratulations Paul! You've gotta be a happy guy right now! Your tale is reminiscent of a somewhat similar experience I had last year:

My tired old minivan (2.2 liter 4 cyl, 2 bbl Holley) was running poorly. First noticed the fuel mileage dropping off. Then the engine became harder to start and would occasionally stumble when shifting gears (5 speed manual). The stumbling slowly worsened to the point where it would pop thru the carb, buck and sometimes stall simply by stepping on the gas.

Thinking it was a carb problem I removed and rebuild the carb (not an easy task on that engine!). I got a bit of improvement, but it still ran poorly and then quickly worsened again. Finally one rainy afternoon at work I could not get it to start at all and had to have a buddy tow me home.

Out of desperation swapped a bunch of ignition parts with parts from a one of my kid’s cars. The van immediately sprang to life and ran better than it had in a couple of years. Thru the process of elimination I discovered the ignition wires - despite looking like new - were “leaky” and had been the source of the problem all along. ...Bob M

Hi Paul,

Wow! That is super news! Boy, they feel great when they are running right, don't they? :>)

I was forever tippin' the things back against the firewall and lettin' 'em hang there while I pulled trannys on the darned things. Don't ya know about half the time, the cap ended up 'cocked' on the dist. and I was forever gettin' that "rat-a-tat" sound. :>)

Gotta admit, never heard of a coil makin' one hesitate, tho. :>)

Glad ya got 'er goin',

Allan
