I grew up with Farmalls, we always shut the gas off just like the switch, Now IH sells a needle valve with a neoprene top, one little piece of grit in the line the strainer don,t catch and it,s needle valve time again. At least with the brass ones it might flood once in awhile but not the neoprene. My kids and grandkids were taught like me Every tractor older than a 656 shut off the gas.

There should be no reason to have to shut off the fuel on an M. I have a B, C, and M and in over 30 years I've never shut the fuel off unless I’m taking the fuel line apart. The carburetors never run over or drip either.

If your carburetor is dripping, the float or needle and seat valve are the problem. Either the float doesn’t float, or the needle and seat aren’t sealing, or the fuel level is too high. Simple as that.

If it floods its self out its probably the needle and seat or the float adjustment or the float has a hole in it or the float could be sticking because of rust or gumming fuel..Take carb apart and you will probably find out the problem on a M if you are careful you can drop down the bottom of the carb without taking it off the engine I have a M I dont use often enough and it hates stale gas so I have to do it 2 or 3 time a year..Hope this helps Jim

Your carb needs a new needle and seat, or the float is hanging up against the side of the bowl. As a temporary fix keep the fuel shut off until ready for use, and don't choke it until it starts to run. Choke it only to keep it running.

You may need to install a carburetor kit. Hal
