You Gentlemen are obviously "in the know." I have come across two tractors that I am torn between. The first (and the one I like the most) is a 51 Farmall M. She is absolutely beautiful, straight tin, excellent paint, narrow front, just a gorgeous tractor. Rears are about 50 percent, rims look good. Tires are loaded with antifreeze. Tractor has original engine with "low" time, solid compression, and no smoke. No fenders, but has been converted to 12 volts. Overall this tractor is like a 9 out of 10. The owner is asking $3800. Do you think that is fair? I consulted the "values" page, but didn't really see anything comparable. I did see a perfectly restored Super M on ebay last week for 4600. It didn't sell. I tried to email the guy with hopes of a conversation (and to make him an offer) but he thought I was a scammer (and I'm not) and sent an email threatening to turn me in to ebay. oh well.

The second tractor is a JD model 60. It has factory 3pt, live PTO, and live hydraulics. It is a solid working tractor, older paint, 80% rears. They are mismatched, but close. Rims are decent but have rust. He wants $4000 for it.

I want a tractor to pull a mower, put a loader on, and possibly run a blade and snowblower.

I realize this means I need a live hydraulic unit for the M, as well as a 3pt hitch. I also know I'll need some "plumbing" work as far the hydraulics go.

I want the M - but the JD seems more practical...

So I'm looking for opinions - what do you guys think -- Would you pay $3800 for that M?

When I posted seeking answers last week many thought I should consider a number series tractor or a utility. I definitely thought about that - but I really like the M --

I look forward to your responses.

Tom,

I have had a '53 JD 60 for 23 years and just got a '53 Super M.

The JD is great, but has a too fast reverse. PTO is 42 hp. Not good for finish mower because power is not smooth(2 cyl). You must have PS with a loader and the hand clutch is not good unless you have three hands. I prefer the hand clutch for the bush hog and blade. It is great for bush hog, blade and downright pulling, this thing is strong.

Super M is 46 pto hp, smooth power (Probably not the lugging power of the 60) and seems to be easier to steer. (Both are narrow front). I think reverse is slower than the 60 too. M is about the same tractor except for slightly less power.

They are both great machines, I have the best of both worlds.

Agree with others that prices are a bit high, especially the M. JD are running pretty high but the 60s are not as bad as the 620-630s, they are ridiculous. I think they are both about $500-1000 high for this area.

I just got my SM in Arkansas with 3pt and 50% tires for $1100 but it needs paint.

Tom: from the jobs listed, that you wish to perform with the tractor, live PTO is the most important feature. Secondly for the snow blower you want a reverse gear below 1 mph at full throttle. Laying all other likes and dislikes aside, those two are number one. You can add a 3 point to just about any tractor good enough for mower or snow blower.

There is an ad in the Saturday Jefferson City, Missouri paper for a WD45 (Allis) for $1200.00. Add reads "12 volt, power steering, good rubber, extra clean". The WD45 has around 45 horsepower, live hydraulics, live PTO, 3-point is a cheap add on. This one has have a narrow front end.

The M should go for $1000- to $1500- central Mo. The JD 60 - don't know - don't see any JDs in the area.

If you want a work tractor, I would look around. Working tractors have a tendency to get banged up. I would make sure it was in good mechanical condition - dings in the sheet metal and paint would be a minor consideration.

Of the two I'd take the JD60, and I own a red one.

I agree with the other posts, but one thing was not mentioned. All three are geared too fast for a snowblower, unless you only have an inch or so, then you don't need one.

It takes a really good M to bring 1500 in central Iowa. I bought an M last spring at auction with live hydraulcs,12 volt, disc brakes and power steering, good rears, good tin and paint for 975.If you ever ran a 2cyl hand clutch with a loader you would take a farmall in a minute. In 1976 I bought a G with a 45 loader, Between the clutch and the awkward shifting I didn't keep it long.My 2 cents worth

Both seem a little high. I know of a nice good running 450 farmall right now for $3950 and that has good rear tires new front and a new paint job to boot

I'm from south central PA. Locally I've seen M's in the condition you've described sell for about $2500-$3000 in this area. They're a good solid tractor but the one your looking at is over priced for this area. Maybe you can talk the fellow down some.

Both tractors in my opinion are way way to expensive. Like others have said, a nice decent Farmall M shouldn"t run you more than $1,500.00. I think if I were you i"d keep looking. Watch the photo ads on here and you"ll find some nice deals from time to time.

Good Luck!
Jeff

What until the spring consignment sale season! Heck, one is coming up on the first of the year at "Dick's Tractors"..... ...You could get an "M" for $900 in running condition there as he often has a dozen or more of them there.

I'd still say you should walk away from both of them..... ..... .Look for a 300 or 350. I seen a nice 350 sell this spring for $1600.

TP,

There ya go again! Confusing the issue with plain ol’ common sense and logic! :>)

Agreed. For what he wants to do, these two tractors just aren't suited for the occasion.

However, given the choice between the two..... ....

I would not pay over $1,500 for an M unless it was absolutely perfect with new rubber all around. The John Deere 60 is way over priced, I would not even consider a tractor with mis-matched rear tires, even if both were brand new. It just tells me the owner is not too particular, what else has been done to the tractor that isn't right?

I dunno Rusty,

Actually the two tractors aren't really the same.

If that John Deere has the factory three point, then it is probably a '53 or newer and should have the power steering as well.

If so, it is darned well worth $3500 to $3800.

However, if it has just got an aftermarket 3-point hangin' on that power-trol, then yes, it is overpriced.

Tom,

The M is wayyyyy y overpriced.

A good M freshened up nicely will bring $2500. Plus the fact, you will have to spend additional funds to equip it to do what you want it to do. The way it stands, all it is equipped to do is pull.

The 60, at the outside, is overpriced by a mere $200 (those green ones are just high priced). If it has a factory 3-point, then chances are pretty darned good that it also has factory power steering. It has live PTO and live hydraulics and it is all set up and ready to do what you want to do.

The question is, are you ready to deal with that hand clutch? No big deal, but if you are not used to them, it takes some learning.

If I were standing in your shoes, I'd try to get the guy with the 60 to come down a bit as this would be my choice. And, I'm the guy who is red to the core.

$3800 for an M? for just a little more I could get you into a John Deere G all restored with new rubber. As far as Ms go you should be able to get a real good one for $1500 - 2000 I wish they were worth more but they won't bring it here. Super MTA, NOW THATS A DIFFERENT STORY

Gentlemen,

Thanks for helping me save my money. I'm new to this. I thought $3800 seemed too much for the M. It is darn nice though.

TP (from Nesbit) I would like more info on that consignment sale can you email me info about it. My email is nettling@suscom.net

As for the Model 60, it does have a factory 3pt, live hydraulics, and live PTO.

A friendly gentlemen I met on the board here said I could come over and give his 60 a run tomorrow... maybe then I'll have some more knowledge - right now I'm just banging my head into the wall.

As for that 350 - can you tell me where it is?
