Guy's, Gy's Guy's. This one has been hashed over very, very often on this list and accurate information is out there. Disc Brakes WERE NOT an option on Ms from the beginning. The Lamberts were a aftermarket option that could be installed after the fact. For instance, a farmer gets his 1939 M overhauled in 1952, he then gets those nifty disc brakes installed at the same time, plus maybe those nice larger sleeves and pistons, the dealer throws in a paint job and a fresh set of the new style decals, and his old 39 is now pretty close to a Stage I Super M for some cash, but nothing like new tractor money. It saves him from having to wait for a new tractor (war's on, you know). 52 years later, a colelctor looks at the rusty, trusty old M and think's everything's original becuase it's the same color rust and weathered evenly. Ain't so.

They didn't ration tractors, but that doesn't mean you didn't have to wait. What happened was that everybody THOUGHT rationing was going to happen, and farmers all went out and bought new tractors if they were able. There were some material shortages as well, and IH just couldn't keep up with demand on the Ms- lots of farmers were getting bigger tractors (this was about the period that M sales started beating the Hs.)

So you got big demand for Ms and not enough tractors. Dealers started ordering tractors even if they didn't customers for them, because by the time IH built them months later, they'd have them sold. There was a huge backlog- I've heard some dealers had 15-20 tractors on order.

IH changed over part of Louisville to built the M size tractors (Super Ms by now), the Korean War ended and farmers relaxed a little, and some dealers ended up with those 15-20 Super Ms sitting on their lots when IH sent them the entire shipment at once!

But yes, in 1952, you were going to wait for an M for quite some time. Now if you wanted a Super A, that was no problem!

My IH parts man told me disc brakes were available 46 and after. If IH would have kept the Osco Lambert we wouldn't have the problems we do with IH brakes. They used twice the splines on the brake shaft and also in the center of the disc, the sliding surface is about 3/8 in wide. that eliminates binding and making indents in the brake shaft.Replacment discs from IH were 80 bucks apiece. a local brake shop did all mine for 165. that was in 2000.I use the M a lot and haven't adjusted the brakes yet.

Disk Brakes were an option on the M from the beginning. These were built by the Lambert company and are known as Lambert Disk brakes. Some say they were a factory option, some say only dealer installed. I don't know which is correct. They are shown in the M parts catalog. I think you could change any M over to these brakes provided you could find the parts. These brakes are different than the brakes on the Super Series. The splines on the shafts are different, the housings are different and the disks are different. The housings are held on with 3 bolts, whereas I think the Super series diskbrake housings have 5 or 6 bolts. I have a 1947 MD that has the Lambert brakes. I had the disks relined in a local shop to rebuild them. I did not do much else, except to sand off the clamping surfaces and replace a missing spring which was not easy to find. The Lambert brakes are uncommon and a lot of folks are not aware that they exist. However, I've seen several Ms the past few years so equipped. I've heard that they could also be had on the H, but I've never seen an H with them.
