on my 47 M, I installed new points, plugs all tune up parts, rebuilt the carb, but when i pull the throttle back fast spits backfires, pull it slow, its fine. Idles great, at full throttle, put a load on it it starts to spit and sputter. Is it to rich or lean on the high speed mixture? Or a governor problem?

Since you rebuilt the carb you probably got the power jet or another hole in the carb plugged by dirt, very easy to do. I even put the float bowl gasket in backwards once which caused the same lean condition!!

Double check the power jet setting-it only comes into play when you open the throttle.

Since you have a mag it may not be putting out enough energy, but my money is on the carb. Let us know what you find.

Hi Ben, If that M has a distributor the point gap should be .020". Hal

If you're at .013" you're good to go. Did it do all this sputtering before you installed new points? If you're getting a good hot spark to the plugs the mag is probably ok. The engine may not be getting enough gas for full throttle. Make sure the intake manifold is tight. Hal

Recheck the point gap. It should be .020. If it is too cloes the engine will spit and sputter.

Pull the choke about half way out and then quickly open the throttle. If it is better then it is lean on the high speed mixture. If it is worse (which I doubt) then it is too rich. If it has no effect, it is not the carburetor.
