3pt hitch ignorance...

I have an IH 404 and a blade and plan to plow snow this winter with it. They way my three point hitch works it does not allow it to "float" over varying height ground rather it seems to want to stay fixed in the position you move it to.

How or what do I need to do to make it "float" so that it will not tear into my blacktop?

Yes, I know I am ignorant when it comes to it's use. I have read the owners manual and I cannot find it refering to floating the 3 pt or leaving it down so it can change height by itself.

Thanks

Phil I don't remember just what the 404 and 504 had for hitch but if is a true 3 point it will float because all 3 points float. Only yjr old fast hitches had down pressure.

Aces: Your right, 404 and 504 have the new type rockshaft with internal lift cylinder. Just looked at it in the IT manual. From the description I can't see how Phil is getting double action.

Could it be that his 404 came from factory with no 3 point, and his hitch is an aftermarket hooked into a double action control valve with double action cylinders. The IT manual doesn't say but the valve looks same as those used on 504, 656, etc. in which case it would have a float position if lever were pushed further in the down position.

I believe those are for the remotes, not the 3 point.

Phil

The fast hitch on my 706 would float. I was told that there was some way to get down pressure on the fast hitch.

There is a pin (about 5/8") just below the lift cylinder that is removed to make the 2 ph float.
