What I have is a Super A the has been rebuilt a couple of years ago. The Battery was new then along with the starter and Bat. cables and generator.Connections are good and clean but when you hit the starter it just turns real slow. I have changed starters and it a little better. Oh its still 6 volts. My Dads and nephews tractors turn over real nice compared to mine. Maybe to small of a cable? Thanks

I would like to add that the joints in the starter between the field, nose cone, and end cap with the brushes need to be clean and free from rust. This is an often overlooked part of the grounded part of the starter electrical circuit.

Shaggy – Good advice below – especially regarding the cables. Make sure the cables are adequately sized (AWG #1 minimum), are as short as possible, and that the terminals are in good shape and soldered – not just crimped. (Often crimped terminals look good from the outside but are actually making contact on only a few strands of the cable inside.)

Another item to check: The starter switch. As the switch is used it’s copper contact faces wear/burn away causing it’s resistance to increase. Try cranking the engine for 10 seconds or so then immediately feel around the switch. If it is any warmer than the surrounding components it should be replaced.

Hugh’s advice to run the battery ground cable to a tranny cover bolt is good. I like to take it one step further: Attach the ground cable under one of the starter mounting bolts.

With a good battery, cables and starter your SA should tip over smartly on 6 volts! ...Bob

Shaggy, One more thing, that no one mentioned. During the real cold weather I go from 30wt to 20 wt oil, it makes a big difference when it gets real cold!

Shaggy: I find the best source for those heavy cables are shops that sell big diesel truck parts. They are using those same cables on 12 volt big diesels. Often times they will have the lenghts you need for a SA all made up. It will be the ones they use going between batteries.

Shaggy: I'd almost bet your problems are either too small cable, poor post connection or poor ground, and maybe all three. For 6 volt systems, use 1 gauge wire, soldered on ends. Another item I've done with my offsets, is run my ground strap to one of the bolts that hold transmission top. I find I get much better ground going right to cast for my ground. I changed the first one about 10 years ago, and have had lot less problem.

You also mentioned changing starters and was somewhat better. Have a good look at your starter drive, it can take a lot of juice if in bad condition.

run your hands over cable and connections as its cranking.remove coil wire while doing this .if connections or cable gets hot that is a good place to start.battery may also have low capacity. hope this helps
