Hi all, what a wonderful board. I have a question about my M not starting. Once in a while it will start, but not very often. I've replaced points, plugs and wires. It has a magneto. Also I haven't replaced the Capacitor yet. The temp. yesterday was in the thirties, so I figured I would put it in the garage and install a tank heater. But, no go. This is the tractor that my loader is on, so I need it, and possibly soon. Any suggestions as what I should check or replace first??

I've had bad condensers do this exact thing. Even new ones are sometimes bad. This is a good spare part to always have on hand.

Hi Terry, Make sure you have those points adjusted to .013". After you have them adjusted rotate engine until points are closed then slide a piece of #400 emery cloth through the points.
As (old) has suggested replace that condenser too.
Make sure none of the wires in the mag are touching ground. Have someone crank the engine with the starter and check spark at the plug by holding the wire away from plug. It should be a good spark. If it still doesn't start and you have good spark at the plug, shoot some gas into the sparkplug hole and see if it fires. If it fires for a second you need to check for a fuel problem. Hal
Did it run before you installed points?

Any time you put in new points you should always do the conderser also, that could be the problem. You could also have a number of other problems. Whats the spark look like if not blue theres where your problem is. If its blue its probably a fuel problem.

Farmalls can be picky about how you use the choke.

Try pulling it all the way and cranking for just a couple of turns, then let off the starter button. Now push it about half way in and try to start it.

It might want some other combination, but usually full choke for just a second, then part choke to start works best.

I guess that I forgot to mention that it doesn"t seem to fire at all. It seems that I have had this problem on and off for a couple of months, but I don"t use it much. But now I need it to move snow and it isn"t very dependable.

Usually the M doesn"t require choking, but the way you discribe works well with my H.

HI TERRY, The first thing I would do ids take the coil wire out of the distributor cap and hold it about 1/4 to 1/2 " away from the screw terminal on the side of the mag and have someone turn it over for you and as one of the others said see what you have for color or any spark at all. If not if you have a wire at that termenal un hook it and try again. If still nothing Try Points ,condenser, coil wire, maybe a short, Or maybe that dreded Coil {LOL} No big deal if it is I have some of the best prices around for new ones. JON

I had a problem with my 39 A were it would start hard until one day it wouldnt start at all, what i found is the coil was positioned to close to the end of the coil cap tab and it burned off the tab end, so i turned the coil and cleaned the tab, hope this can help? CLIFF
