I have a 1953 Super M that has been converted to 12v. with a 12v. generator. When I got it home the amp. guage showed discharge ,I looked and the batt. was hooked up with a neg ground so I assumed it was in backwards and reversed it .Everything seems to be operating properly now but I was wondering ,does it make any difference, what bad things can happen ?

If it were me,and it aint,Id start it up and get it over half throttle, then pull a cable off of the battery and see if it still runs, then you know its ok.Some will chew me out for it,but it works for me.

John,

Just curious, why would you pull off a battery cable if everything is working as it should?

Nothing bad can happen if the ammeter is showing a charge.

Bob's advice is correct only if it is not the original pos ground coil. If it is the original coil it should be the reverse. Either way it won't make a noticable difference, just a slight loss of power if not correct.

My advise IS correct for most any coil labeled (+) and (-). (As I stated.)

The exceptions would be coils lableled (BATT) and (DIST). Use on a system with ground polarity the opposite of the system they were designed for would require the (DIST) and (BATT) terminals to be connected to the system opposite of what they are labeled.

For negative ground, if it is battery ignition, the (+) side of the coil should be connected to the ignition switch, (-) side to the distributor.

Beyond that, it sounds like it's working as it is, so I'd leave it alone.
