Hydraulic delay lift fitting???

I have been looking for a rear hydraulic delay lift valve for my M. Does anyone have one or know where to get one? Or can one be simply made?

Also, what are the lengths of the hoses from the belly pump? I have two old rotted out hoses, but the rear is gone completely.

The delay was done by putting two large cylinders on the front sections of the cultivator (3") and a smaller cylinder on rear section (2") the larger cylinders were easeier to lift so front would come up first after completing the rear section would rise. Droping the cult. push leaver forward pushed the ball off of seat for front sections,they would drop, push lever all the way would push 2nd ball off seat and rear would drop. Clear as mud, right. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but if I remember correctly the delay for our cultivator was just a fitting with a smaller diameter passage. this reduced flow rate caused the pressure on the rear cylinder to be lower until the others reached the end of their travel.

There is a built-in delay in the belly pump. One of the left ports has a delay for bringing a cultivator out in sequence. I think it is the rear left port.

Hi Andy,

Boy, I don't think so (we went thru this a few months ago). The "delay" gizmo had to be added in series with the hydraulic line outside the tractor's system.

They were kind of a joke and is probably why they never caught on.

I've never used one as delay, so you're probably right. I was going from what I'd read (misread) and from the way the valve body is constructed. In trying to figure it out, it looks to me like the two little valve balls are lifted one after the other. If not, they went to a lot of trouble to just make a valve body which would detent in lift then kick off when pressure hit relief. I'll have to study an old valve a little more. After I thought I recognized the delay system I quit trying to figure it out.

I have to agree with Allen, I have had those pumps apart and have had my loader hooked up to the front or rear port on the H on that side and there is no difference. The IT manual does say it though . JON

Were you using two ports at once? If you only use one would you know if the valve delayed or not?

I've got two laying on the bench. I'll look again tonight.

Allan, the manual for the H does describe the left rear port as being a delayed lift port, for bringing the rear portion of a cultivator out of the ground after the front has been lifted. Whether or not it actually was effective is up to question. I personally have never tried it.

After running a front and rear culitivator on an H back in the 50's using all three ports, I have to say there is no difference. The two sides and the rear all varied a little in raising, but not much. We tried using the factory delay valve, if I remember right, sometimes it worked, sometimes not, mostly not.

I remember the H cultivator having a little sticky spot when you pushed the lift lever forward to drop it. It would only drop the right side unless you pushed a little harder. I remember that because I remember my dad waiting for me at the end of a round because I only had the right side in the dirt. Kinda sticks in your mind from then on.
Seems also that that cultivator was all mechanical on the outside, no cylinders, but it has been awhile.

Hi Dave,

Those cylinders (one on each side) mounted to a bracket that tied to the rear axle housing on each side of the tractor. The brackets mounted to the axle just like the drawbar did and is why the drawbar had to be removed.

You couldn't see the "ram" of the cylinder because it worked up inside of a "tube" affair that was attached to the lift linkage.

They were kind of a neat old setup.

I spent a lot of hours on that H with the cultivator and I believe I even took it off and put it on a couple times, but I just don't remember. I must have been cylinders though 'cause it certainly was the hydraulic lift lever I was yanking on.

Rusty,

If I remember right, doesn't it say something to the effect of "to be used with" the rear delay?

I'm sure the delay gadget was nothing more than a little orificed plug inserted in the line.

I remember my dad had those goofy things laying around the shop at one time; never used 'em tho.
