Hey
I was wondering if anyone out there could give some friendly advice on what might be wrong with my 1951 McCormick W-6. I notice that when I put it into gear and go take off it's like the governors kick in late and give it that extra few r.p.m.'s. I also notice that if I try to engage the gears when the throttle is above half way that engine chockes and sputters like it is flooded. I'm also noticing a definite lack of power. I had the carburetor apart and cleaned it and re-installed and probelms still persist. Could this be the carburetor? the governors? or the timing? Thanks in advance for all your help
Allan

Can't tell for sure, but according to your explanation, it sounds like it is running lean, not rich. How did you clean your carb? You should soak it overnight in carb cleaner, blow it out with compressed air and put a carb kit in it. Do you know how to adjust the float, main, and idle jets?

Hey
I took the Carb all apart and soaked the works in carb cleaner overnight. I have a video here that shows you how to do the carburetor rebuild and after watching it again I noticed that it said something about the linkage between the carburetor and the governor's and how it can sometimes become loose and sloppy. I also notice that gas leaks right from the bottom of my carburetor which could be further indication that it needs that rebuild kit?

Most IH carbs will leak from the bottom, particularly if flooded. You could need a new needle and seat for the float mechanism, or the float could be hanging up on the inside of the bowl, or the float could have a pinhole in it and be full of gas. The notch and rod you mentioned are sometimes hard to get positioned properly. If you missed the connection, the throttle will not properly control the rpm. Suppose it could be worn, although I have never seen one that was bad enough to cause the problem you describe. Be sure your float is ok. The setting is is 1 5/16" from the top of the gasket to the bottom of the float, this means the float is horizontal, with the carb in the upright position. With the engine warm and at WOT, turn the main adjusting screw in until the rpm's drop, then out until smooth. At idle, adjust the idle mixture until smooth. You might have to do both a couple of times. If either of these adjustments do not change the rpm, then your carb is either still dirty, or the mixture needles/jets are worn. I suppose you could have governor problems, but the problems you describe are usually fuel.

Hey
Thanks for the advice, I've always been a little wary of playing with idle screw and such in fear that I might mess up the settings or make it run worse, i guess though that I'll just have to get in there and tweek and play with it till I get it right. I remember that when I re-installed the carb that the linkage between that and my governors was very loose. It's possible that this could have been knocked out of the proper alignment. Do you know how to re-align this shaft so that the governor and carb are working in unison?
Thanks in advance
Allan

The rod fits in the notch, it is hard to see when reassembling. The rod from the governor is loose until you get it installed right. You won't hurt anything messing with the screws, as you can always go back to the recommended initial settings which are 1 turn out for the idle mixture and 3 turns out for the main jet screw.
