I have a 1976 International 1046 4X4 (D-358 engine)with a Danfoss steering pump. On starting up the tractor no steering is present - steering wheel can be continually revolved with no movement of the road wheels. After some time say 15 minutes some erratic movement of the road wheels may take place along with some binding at the steering wheel. Once finally operational this can result in the front wheels starting to oscilate while travelling straight and or a total loss of steering (very dangerous and never done now that the problem has occured on the road once). I have checked the hydraulic ram at the front axle which appears fine as does the main hydraulic and piggy back power steering pump. Could it be the steering orbital (type OS PB 100)? What should I look out for? Could it be something else? Any suggestions would be useful as the tractor is currently out of action.

we have machines at work with charlynn orbital steering. danfoss would be very similar. after working on hyd system and air gets in, the steering gets erratic and jumpy untill air is purged. if there are no visible external oil leaks, then one could assume that the steering motor is bypassing internally. seal kits are fairly inexpensive, but if you have no experience with them i would suggest taking it to a competent hyd shop.

Wow! That would be scary! Never heard of a steering box that wasnt mechanically connected to the steering linkage (boosted or not).Even Ford's truck system with Ram cylinder still used a box with a pitman arm to steer mechanically with the ram as power assist.
Without knowing a thing about your setup,I would say the thing has "morning sickness"...a total leakage around spool valves when cold.Sounds like new/rebuilt parts needed badly.

Paul, you haven't been around any tractor newer than a 1962, then. IH hasn't had a mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the front end since the '60 series. It's been all hydrostatic from the release of the 706 and 806.

That said, simple visual inspections are not sufficient to deem a component "fine." Even though everything looks "fine," something obviously isn't "fine" here.

There's a box up in the steering column that's attached to the steering wheel. There are lines running down to the MCV valve assembly on the left side of the torque tube, just ahead of the steps. There's the MCV valve itself. There are lines running ahead to the steering cylinder, and there is the steering cylinder itself. Plus there is a hydraulic pump, filters, and fluid to check.
