O-4 question

Since there were not any O model tractors in the Mississippi Delta, the only O-4's I have ever seen were at tractor shows. My question is, were all O-4's equipped with disc brakes? I have located a late 51 or early 52 model (serial plate missing, cast dates of 10-5-W on block and 11-18-W on center housing) O-4 that has IH disc brakes which were original on it. I don't have anything that tells what type brakes were standard on the O-4. Prior to seeing this tractor I assumed the O-4 had band brakes and the Super O-4 had disc brakes.

Just to clear things up as far as I know IH never made a Super O4 tractor. About 10 miles from me is a man with a super W4 that has band brakes. His serial number is after my 1953 SW4. So it seems someone sold him a Sw4 engine on a W4 transmission setup. Also none of the controls are set up like a SW4 more like a W4 . He's been passing it off as the only Sw4 in the area for years. He has a nice surprise coming this year at the shows when my real SW4 makes its 1st appearance.

Harold,
The orchard tractors did vary some from regular IH practice as you are guessing. Some 0-4 and o-6 tractors started recieving disc brakes in 1948- the discs stood up better to the constant use they got in orchards. Some of them got live hydraulics at that point. Definitly unusual tractors- some got lift type hitches at that point too that are pretty wild- never seen or heard of one surviving.

Thanks Guy. This would be one of those with the factory discs but not a rear lift. I think it probably may have had hydraulics as there are some hydraulic lines laying around but all of that is gone from the tractor. Since the main castings were October and November 51 I guess it is a early 52 model. It didn't have serial plate and I didn't have anything to scratch with to get engine number.

This one is a O-4, not a OS-4. Lots of sheet metal is missing but the hood and inner parts of the rear fenders are still on the tractor. The brakes appear to be IH, not Lambert.

IH never made a super O-4. If the tractor is set up like an O-4 but has disc brakes I would say either somebody changed them if that was even possible or they took a Super W-4 and converted it to make a Super 0-4. I have a 46 W-4 and a 48 0S-4, I also have all the books if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

In this case, not everything made it into the parts book.

It is not made from a Super W-4. The castings are late 1951. It has hand clutch and the low seating and brake pedal positions which the W-4 did not have.

Didn't IH make an OS-4 and OS-6? Or am I dreaming?

IH made both an OS-4 and an OS-6 but only the Super series had disc brakes. I have an OS-4.
