OS-6 or O6???

Today I found an interesting tractor. The owner claims it"s an O-6. The fenders seem to be from an OS-6, and it appears to be an OS-6. The side-engine panels are not currently present. How do I tell which it is?

I did find some numbers from castings:

On top of the transmission the number is 6550 DG. On the right side of the clutch housing the number is 6002 DD.

The tractor appears to be a distillate, except the fuel lines and valves are missing. Did the O-6 have the same large fuel tank as the OS-6?

Thanks for your help!

It looks like a fairly straight tractor, nice Moose rack on the front!

I just noticed a major detail on the tractor.

How many O6 tractors were made?

How many were made with a distillate setup with the small gasoline starting tank?

How many OS-6 tractors were made with the distillate setup?

Thanks eyeryone for you replies!

If the tractor is an OS-6 there would not have been side panels on it, unless it has an O6 hood. The OS-6 would not even have the hinge brackets for the side panels. Try to find the serial tag on the bell housing, I have seen many that have been changed around. I bought an OS-4 that had O-4 hood and other parts on it.

The serial tag was missing. If the hinges were not present, but the tractor is indeed an O6(with the O6 hood), where should I look for rivet holes?

The hinges were spot welded to the hood not riveted.

Looks like an OS-6 to me. Those rear fenders look original to the tractor.

Also in the new tractor 1951 pictures I have, the O-6 was standard with spoke front wheels and the OS-6 was standard with solid front wheels as on this pictured tractor. All features are identical to the OS-6 I have pictured new in 1951.

According to my Parts Catalog, early O-6 came with 3 spoked front wheels. They were changed to the solid cast wheels before the OS-6 came out. So all OS-6 had the solid wheels.

If the chassis serial tag is still there the prefix for the 06 is OBK, for the OS6, OBKS. Lacking that, the engine serial (assuming the orginal block) underneath the #1 spark plug should be prefixed by OBKM for the O6 and OBKSM for the OS6. I'm not that familiar with the orchard series, but at least some of the castings from both models are probably the same.
