Hi Fred, That S/N is for a 1958 tractor. S/N 501-2406 were made in 1958. I would contact the Corps of Engineers for help to see if they still have records for that tractor. Did you buy it from a government sale or know where it was sold?
That AF might suggest Air Force. It probably was purchased on a government contract that specified certain modifications. After all these years that may be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Hal

The serial numbers on modified tractors were their own run of numbers, don't match up with the regular numbers. In the absence of a serial number list for the modifieds, can't tell the year from them. I don't think that any serial lists for modified tractors has surfaced at the archives.

Only way to get the year from what information we have right now is to use the date codes on the castings.

I can't find anything specific on Modified 340s. In general, the modified serial numbers are in 3 sections:
sequence, customer, spec

I haven't seen a customer with a dash in it, so need to guess a little:
sequence 710 (within customer, maybe spec)
customer P-AF (no idea who it was)
spec 532

Specs usually started with 501, first digit was major spec. Minor revisions added 1. Don't know if the middle digit was part of the minor spec number or something else.

I realize this isn't much help, but it is better than nothing.

Thanks for the effort Jim, you are right, it doesn"t tell me much, however it is a start. The tractor has a brass plate with "THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS" which I havn"t read yet {it is going to take some clean-up} it may give a farther idea or clue. Again, thanks Jim fred

I just woke up on one point. The "P" in the serial number may be the standard suffix for IPTO, if the tractor is equipped that way. Would make the customer code just the AF.

Did you look at the serial number in the thread "Chisolm-Ryder Bean harvester" that started on Monday?
