After installing a re-built head on a friends 53 H,I discovered that I had over torqued the bolts by 20 ft pounds.I torqued them at 90 instead of 70 as the manual says.( I know, read the manual first next time)What is my next step? Do I leave it alone,Loosen and torque to 70 And is the head gasket still OK?John.

I think in this case just leave it alone. The 70 lbs.ft. spec is because of the size and strength of the bolts. The 70 pound figure is what the SAE boys have determined that the bolts will stand before stretching or breaking, and these figures are always on the conservative side. In other words, the bolts are torqued until they fail, which is always way beyond what will be experienced in real life. Even at 90 pounds you should still be well within the safety margin.

Hey Rusty, you evidently haven't read the 1991 issue of Machinery and Parts,The Novices Approach. On page 37, article 2-C paragraph 7 about half way down on the left hand side, it specifically says "Do not leave unnecessary parts or portions thereof in machine when assembly occurs." I would be willing to bet that includes fingers and portions thereof. HAHAHAHAHA Yeh I know, everybody likes a little but nobody needs a smaft one. Later, Harley

It was my finger, not Rusty's and I believe it helped seal the front on the head.

On my Super H I got my finger caught between one of the studs and a bolt hole in the head, while installing it. After much panic, I got my finger out, leaving a chunk of meat. Before going to the ER, I bled all over the place and hurried to torque the bolts, since I had sealer on the gasket. Forgot the spec and torqued to 80 lbs. After running the tractor a while, the torque setting was still 80 lbs. Unless you mashed the gasket, I think you are ok, just like my finger.

You always have to go back and retorque them hot after you run it a while anyway. I bet they will be in the 75 to 80 pound range after you run it and recheck it anyway. Just my 2 cents

hi john, others can advise you if you should retorque the head, but i do know that once you torque a head gasket it is compressed, and if you loosen the bolts it will be useless, and must be replaced, im just not sure if the extra 20 ft lbs will stres anything, those old ih's are tuff, just wait for cowman or somebody, they'll know, ericlb
