My grandfather always cultivated with a Farmall A. I remember talking hours changing wheel spacing and mounting the pneaumatic lift cultivators. I always used a 3 point hitch cultivator, Ford then Speeco and now an AC toolbar. However, with increasing dependancy on my rebuilt H, I wonder if it is worthwhile to obtain a Farmall cultivator for the limited row crops I grow. Can anyone give me their opinion on this matter?

It's unclear to me whether or not you have a 3 point on your H and are now using the AC toolbar. If not you can. The advantage of front mounts is that you can culitvate much closer to the crop. If all you are doing is running out the middles, a front mount is not neccesary. I have used everything from a front mount on an H (Best) to a rear mount on an 8N (worst).

Are you looking at the front mounted IH cultivator ? If so, and you have much more than a garden to take care of, considder two tractors. The fun wears off mounting the cultivator pretty quickly. If you leave it on, it will always be in the way. A C is a good cultivating tractor, and can be much less expensive than an A or a 140.

I started farming with an IH 140 (one row). Like you, I spent many hours plowing corn one row at a time. Later I bought an H with 2 row, front mount cultivator. To me, this was a dream. What took my 3 days to plow with the 140 I did in one day with the H. Also, I had a 2 disk plow behind the 140, the H pulled a 3 disk plow.

For me, the H was the way to go; however, if you have a small garden the 140/SA is the way to go. I grew 100 acres of corn and used the H, for our 1 acre garden, I used the 140.

Hope this helps.
