super m clutch replacement

I don’t know for sure about an SM, but I have done my 1950 M from the bottom. Not a real pleasant job, but since it had a loader on it, it was definitely faster and less hassle than splitting it. Now, since I have excellent splitting stands, and if there was no loader on the tractor, I would seriously consider splitting it. First, you don’t have to lie on your back fighting with heavy parts etc, getting clutch dust in your face. Second, as these old girls age, the flywheels and possibly pressure plates are getting worn, no longer having that nice flat surface for a clutch to work really nice on. The biggest hassle on the split (if you have good stands) is the steering shaft. Once it is split you can check the ring gear, flywheel, rear main seal, soft plugs, pressure plate, bearings, etc. and replace as necessary.

To anwnser your original question, yes it can be done. Agree with others that it may not be best way. I am by no means a skilled mechanic but can drop pump, and uncouple drive shaft, unbolt pressure plate and remove disc in less than hour. After this is done you can look things over and decide where to go from there.

I&T Manual says:

To remove the clutch cover assembly which is used with the 12 inch diameter lined clutch disc on late production M, MV, MDV, and all Super M. MV, MD and MDV tractors, it is necessary to disconnect the clutch housing from the engine. THE LINED DISC, HOWEVER. CAN BE REMOVED THROUGH THE OPENING IN THE BOTTOM OF THE HOUSING.
