Just got the books and Im a reading and looking and looking and a reading. Need to do all the fluids and grease. Pressure washed it the other day and now all of a sudden no charge. It has a 8 volt battery in it, any problems here? The amp gauge always read a healthy charge rate before the wash. I guess because its trying to charge 8vdc. I was fooling with the regulator cover while it was running and saw a spark jump at the cover screw, my mistake.

I just noticed Its leaking hyd fluid from the pistons or rods coming out from the hyd. unit. Can this be repaired? It makes a clacking noise in reverse like too much endplay in a shaft in the trans case, like a shaft smacking in its bore and a loud whine. All forward gears sound goo d and quiet though. Any quick ideas? I want to pop the top and have a look inside the case.

Any reccomendations on fluids, I want to do them all, probably take a long full day. I am a nut when it comes to lubrication and I have to say this tractor has more places to stick an oil can that any piece of equipment in my machine shop. I have a ton of questions about hooking up implements and parts sources. Like new gaskets for the rear axel pans, or can I just use silicone? And whats the best way to get a 300lb mower deck out from under the machine so I can start figuring ou the jig saw puzzle with the implements. If anyone has any pictures or diagrams of plow and cultivators installed I sure would appreciate sending them my way. Hugh sent me some but I am still confused... a whole lot of parts here.

Sorry for the long post, just a little confused here after dealing with 3ph all my life.

I thank you all for any help you can give me.

Scott: Go for it Reddog has one handsome little tractor there. He got in on the same photo trading with me as you did. Much of what I have, is for newer tractors with fast hitch. I have also done a lot of modifications to my cultivators to use different ground working tools. Thus much of what I have doesn't look very original.

The rig Hugh has is pretty neat. Looks like you can hang all kinds of tools where ever you want them. I will probably make something like that up in the future. This machine has about 6 clusters of cultivators with it and a bunch of other parts used to connect them.

Thanks reddog for any pics you can send me, any and all are most welcome as your dealing with a novice plow boy here. I just want to be ready to rowcrop a couple acers here and need to get all the quirks worked out and repairs made so I dont get behind when the weather comes.

Thanks CNKS for the info, I have all the manuals and have been studying them hard. Is there anything I have to watch for if I pull the top off the trans case? and will I be able to see the broken gear if thats what it is?

Does anyone know of any additive to keep trans fluid from turning to chocolate milk? I know all my tractors sport the cream in the trans. I know it doesnt hurt anything but it just dont look right.

Outside of that , its a nice machine, has the aux hyd. setup as well, no cylinder or hoses though, need to keep my eye peeled for those pieces and other useful attachments.

Thanks to all for your help.

Hyd fluid-IH Hytran or equivalent, transmission and rear axles 90W or 85W-140, engine, 30, 10W-30, or 15W-40. Sounds like you have a broken gear tooth. Will cost you about 90-$100 for a kit to fix the hydraulics. I use gaskets and silicone together. Take your mower loose and grunt a lot. The first thing you want to do is get the Operator's, Parts and Service manuals from Binder Books (the highest quality reprints available). By the way, that mower is one of your most useful implements, and will increase the value of your tractor if you ever sell it. So don't junk it.

Hi Scott,

Echo CNKS; advise gettng a manual for your own use. IH had both an Operator's Manual and a Preventive Maintenance Manual. However, a couple of weeks ago I came across this site which will help you get started..

Copy and paste in your address bar or browser search box.

Link

Bought my 1948 Super A in 1966. Great tractor; I'd be lost without it. As I "mature" it helps me more and more.
Got my manuals from local IH dealer. He retired & closed business 20 years ago. Still visit him; he's pushing 90 & has a Farmall 100 he uses to cut grass (Woods belly mower) and haul firewood. I bought a loader bucket from him a couple of weeks ago to fit on Henderson loader I'm rebuilding.
