Well it never fails! I was on the next to last head bolt (doing the retorquing at temp) on my IH 454 gas when BANG..... The bolt sheared off down inside the head.. I doubt I cand get an easy out in it, it's down in a couple inches (think it's still above the block, haven't pulled the head yet). Is there any where else to get a good head gasket? I really don't like the thoughts of putting another $90 into a head gasket from the IH dealer, plus now the cost of head bolts. Shoulda known to replace them with 6,000+ hours on the clock (800 on rebuild).

A head gasket for the 454 gas (C157 engine) is only about $35 from case IH. The part number is 398066R6

One thing you might, did this on new tractor put welding rod on top of the bolt hocked the welder up turned the welder on and off and screwed the broken piece out with the welding rod.

Thanks! I'll have to give that a try, guess if I just calmed down a minute some ideas like that might pop into my head and might just work.

My question is Did you let the Nuts or bolts off before you retorqued or just retorqued them? JON

Thanks for all the replys!! I just assumed to retorque without letting the tension off, guess this might have been my downfall. Hoping to get the old bolt up out with out removing the head. I guess the near $100 was the whole top end kit (gaskets) SO $35 isn't gonna make me cry (well not as bad...)

Great time to ask a dumb question. Wife says I get one a year, guess I am burning it early. What is the right way to re-torque? Let it off first or just re-tourque it?

Good question, MagMan! Which procedure is correct? I always assumed I should just retighten and never considered letting the tension off first.

Well different strokes for different folks. But The trade school I went to taught us to let the bolt or nut off and then retorque. Other wise it streches the heck out of them as your waiting for that snap to break loose you know the one I mean when you are at 75 FT pounds and your torque wrench goes up to 82 before it brakes loose. LOL When you run the motor it heats up the gasket seats and squiches down so you let the nut off then retorque that one then let another one loose and retorque and so on. I had a neighbor that had a AC D14 and went through about 8 head bolts even sent his torque wrench to the local nuke plant to have the shop check the values. He just kept snaping them waiting for them to brake loose to retorque. hope this helps JON
