In process of bringing Super C that I Put a lot of hours on in my child hood day's back to life. My question is about the hydraulics, it's very slow until warmed up and engine has to be running high rpm. Also it drifts down very quickly. I have the original implements and it lifts them with ease but just won't hold them. Have changed the fluid but didn't help. Would appreciate any help. This is a 1954 Super C.

If you have a "fast hitch" the problem may be your check valve. I have a 52 and it was acting the same way. I put new internals in the block located in front of the seat ( is yours possibly missing altogether? )and the hitch works great now.

By the way mine is also a family tractor ( my Dads first tractor ) that I just restored.

Good luck
Bud

While you are changing the hyd oil, go ahead and pull the hyd screen and clean it. It is the four bolt cover on the left side of the touch control block. It should have a temp gauge going to it or it is plugged off. You might find that it is collapsed or full of junk. It won't fix your drifting, but it may increase your cycle times. Replace the oil with Hy-Tran and no other brand of hyd oil.

I have found that these were rarely cleaned or that there is just that much junk in the system. Out of the six that I own, I have had to replace four of the screens at about $50 from IH. The good news is if you keep them clean, you should never have to buy a new one.

Why would changing fluid fix an obvious LEAK?

Is this touch control, or fast hitch? Either way, there's a leak in the system somewhere that's allowing the oil to flow out of the cylinder and back into the system. Unless of course the oil is pi$$ing all over the ground, and you didn't bother to mention that...

The leak is either in a cylinder or a valve. Both can be rebuilt.

With old hydraulic fluid in the system, I would have changed it first. The problem could be a stuck ball check and changing the fluid could help.

I don't call internal bypassing a leak.

Even though there may be mechanical repair required, I'd still try to run it a while, maybe change the fluid again and see if it improved any.

Did the cold sluggishness improve with the fluid change?

What a gentleman. I like the way you said that. I agree with you. My DC Case sat in a salvage yard for many years before I bought it. The hydraulic cylinder on the Eagle Hitch settled as well. Fresh oil, cleaning of the screen, and a few hours of operation and it now works perfectly. Glenn F.
