'Bout Time

When I went to bed last night, it was 15 below and is now up to 8 below at 7:30am.

I really should get back to my scrapin' and paintin', but just for the heck of it, I'm wonderin' if maybe it is about time to be thinkin' 'bout checking the antifreeze in some of these old engines that are parked out here on poverty hill?

Seems to me that you're 'supposed to do that when the cold weather sets in, but since I moved back down here from North Dakota, there just doesn't seem to be any cold weather 'round these parts. :>)

I think they just did it to make sure you were on your toes. The old bathtub always ran double duty on the cold January mornings, so as to get those new babies warm. :>)

We always say the cold pops them out. I've got 4 or 5 ready to pop so I figure we've got some new ones this morning.

I knew a couple of brothers up in North Dakota that would buy all the brand new baby calves they could get their hands on. They'd buy 'em by the truckloads and wherever they could find ‘em.

The boys (50-60 years old) had a herd of Holstein brood cows and instead of milkin' the cows, they would instead run 'em in the barn, stanchion 'em up and hang 4 of these babies apiece on 'em.

Then, when the calves got to the weight they wanted, they would turn these same calves back to the sale barn to sell as feeders.

It was the darndest operation I've ever seen and boy! Did those old cows ever have to work for a livin'! :>)

I know, but when you milk cows for a living, if you stop the babies, you stop the milk.

Therefore, either the bull or AI duties run continually and calves are a droppin' all the time.

Was going to put a Red Angus bull in with a cull cow to try and control calvin time. Didnt work,bull coud jump fence betterin any deer.

Ya"all keep warm now. It is about 80 here.
