Mornin' Guys,

Yesterday, I goes into town to check on how my old tractor is coming along at the repair shop.

While I was there, I got to looking at a 4020 JD, which had a relatevely new AGCO 745 (Farmhand) loader mounted on it.

Boy, I gotta tell ya. The more I see of these front-hang loaders, the less I like 'em.

Now, I realize full well that all loaders are hard on a tractor, especially in the clutch area. But, the way these new ones are designed, it is a wonder any tractor lasts for very long under one of 'em.

The one I was eyeballing must have weighed 2 ton while it was on the ground, empty! Completely lowered, the back of the bucket was still a good 3 1/2 feet out in front of the front wheels and all of that mounting hardware was strapped right up along the forward engine area.

I didn't like this design when they came out in the 70s and I like 'em even less now.

Call me old fashioned, but give me a loader that at least partially mounts to the rear axle and puts the weight across the complete tractor instead of just pointing it all at that front end.

Not to mention, the price tags on these things are $7K!

Rant over,

Allan

I've heard of a couple tractors cracking in half from front/mid mount loaders when hitting stumps or rocks. I fabbed a mount for my mid mount from 4"sq tubes that runs from mount bracket to axles. It is welded onto the lower ROP bracket, which is bolted around axles. Forces are transfered to back tires. Next project is hoe subframe that slides into tubing.

On my 2250 that was on a Hydro 70 my local IH dealer suggested constructing a sub frame to the rear axle. They took 1x6 steel plate and bolted to a fabricated 90 degree plate that hung from the rear axle. This long subframe was attached to the IH loader mounts near the `clutch`housing. This was done in 1977 3 months after putting the loader onto the tractor. With the IH mounts when I was pushing hard (snow-8 foot bucket and studded chains, YAR cab, 15`5x38s loaded and 2 sets of weights) the front tires would flatten with 45 pounds of air. With the rear axle subframe, the tractor would ride up in the loader frame and just go. As long as I could keep RPMs up by using the Hydro, it would VERY rarely spin out. The pump was tuned to 84 HP. This unit ran until sold in 2002 with no elds or repairs, 5500 hours. I would go side by side my 5220 4x4 with a 520 and 8 foot bucket, loaded 18x38 with no chains and outpush my à mile`; plus the 5220 front planetary calved at 1800 hours, and every 1500 hours after needed new bearings etc. The subframe did not interfere with the Mount-o-matic at all. Farmall-built to last.

Allen Wide front is as much a reason for the front mount as the cab. Westendorf came with the first self mount loader that I know of that went to the rear axel, clutch housing and front end. But front narrow front end that could go through the frame. I Know the guy that but the first westendorf on a 1206. It was not self mount, they could not keep it on the tractor because of the power and size of the 1206. So westendorf made the self mount back to the clutch housing like the WL40 maybe that was the first WL40 don't remember, but after that the guy never broke the loader mounts. A quick mount with wide front with out cab can be done because westendorf did at one time. But with cabs and other things would be hard today.

Hi Aces,

Yes, both Dual and Farmhand also made those front hangers with the heavy bracing back to the axle as well.

I still like these old F-25s that throw that load back on the rear axle. Maybe I can get Nebraska Cowman to find me one at all the auctions he goes to. Heck of a loader, I think.

Hi Gentlemen,

Sounds interesting! I would like to have a loader for my Farmall C or Super C. A small one that can handle heavy loads of rocks, loam, etc. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Bob

Hi Todd,

Nebraska, I haven't been there for a long time, 8 years may be. Around Licoln, then out to Lexington on a service call. It would cost more than you would sell it for to have it shipped out my way. I appreciate the offer though, thanks.

REA If you do get out this way I'll probably still have it. Plus it would fit in the back of a pickup .

Alan, I have to agree with you. I think the reason for the mounting system you describe is because the older rear axle mount style just is not compatible with having a cab on the tractor. But on the other hand, I personally know of several H Farmalls that were broken in two while using McCormick #31 loaders.

Hi Rusty,

Well, actually, there are a lot of "rear axle mount" loaders that are designed to clear the cab.

I agree however, that the whole idea of these front hangers originated with the problem of the cabs being in the way of the loader (or, the "tother way around).

But wow! You can just stand there and see the strain placed on that front axle assembly. Whew! Gives me heartburn. :>)

But, I guess lots of em been hangin" out front like that for lots of years, too. Hmmmm

I agree about the front hangers. They scare me. I got tired of trying to find a resonably priced loader, in good condition, that didnt scare me for my M, so Im in the process of fabricating my own from scratch. Its the 3rd one Ive built, so maybe this time I can keep the number of mistakes down to a dozen or so.

Im doing 4x4 square tubing from the rear axle to the front of the side mount plates. Im also trying to retain the ability to mount the tractor from the front, not just the rear (does anyone else hate stepping over that damn seat suspension?). 1/2way completed, Im very impressed with its rigitity.
