Stuck Cranking Shaft on Farmall H M

I have an H and an M and the Engine Cranking Shaft (that sticks out below the radiator) on both tractors is stuck like blazes. What is a good (and easy) way to unstick them? Thanks.

Is the small shaft or the large pipe stuck or both?
1. Try tapping on the end with a hammer, try turning the big end with a pipe wrench, or get the flame wrench out & heat things up a bit. 2. You could jack the front end up & remove the wheels to gain access to the crank area (CAUTION! Block things securely to prevent an accident when working under the front end!!)
3. Take the bolster off & turn it over so you can see what you are doing and not having to work under the tractor.
It took several years to rust in place so take your time to loosen it up. Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress.

You might try repeated applications of a penetrant such as PB Blaster, or you might have to pull the front bolster off. I suppose you could heat the area around it, but if it is rusted really good, about the only way to get it to work like new is disassembly.

You will probably end up taking stuff off to get at it.I put some CRC Super Lube on mine and whacked it a few times with a good shop hammer.Sure enough it went in and stuck there.I then heated it and waited for it to cool just a bit,and I turned it just a little,then I lubrd it again,stuck a tire tool in there and pryed it back forward.I worked it in and out a few times,but it didnt give up so easy.I had to come up from the bottom like was mentioned earlier,and drive out the wedge pin in the shaft.Then I took it out and shined it up,and its been fine ever since.

Thanks to all of you for your input. I will try these things and let you know which works for me. I will be careful to not build myself a "2000-lb stick trap" though. Thanks again.

The first time I tried to hand crank mine, it was stuck also. I just wanted to see if the old girl would start when it was below 0 degrees, and the battery was to weak to turn it over. I got a can of wd-40 and worried the thing in and out with a pry bar and a hammer for about 20 minutes and it finally freed up. She started on the second pull- hard to keep a good old H down.
I noticed a couple of days later that the pin in the outer end of the shaft was missing. It must have fell out when I removed the crank, and now its no where to be found. Just one more minor thing to fix. ken

Forgot to mention that there is also a grease fitting on the bottom of the bolster to grease the crank pin. I didn't know it was there before, and I suspect the origional owner didn't either. ken
