F-20 Found interesting paint

A few of you know that I've been restoring my old 1936 Farmall F-20. The engine block was cracked and froze to a solid state. No question about it, most everyone else would have sent her to Heaven (scrap heap) but I saved her. I ask myself why several times as the parts bill goes through the roof but her cries from the grave would have killed me. The F-20 was made in June of 1936 (With the help of the Nebraska Farmer, Thanks)and had an older paint job of gray. Under the gray I found plenty of red paint but no gray paint under that. The F-20 is suppose to have gray paint and I was told by others that the old Gray paint matches the bare metal color and I may have missed it. I finished stripping out the old motor and noticed the interior was painted a deep red color. However I may have found a spot with some original gray on the block but I'm not 100 percent sure. Were all the engine blocks interiors painted red or were they painted the color of the tractor? The gray I found seemed pretty dark and much darker then the bare metal color. Any and all opinions welcomed and encouraged.

John,

It's funny that I've found the exact same things that you have found on my tractor. I'm aware that in Novemeber 1, 1936 the tractors were switched to red. However my tractor was produced in June of 1936. The tractor has a bunch of red paint between the frame rails and a bunch of paint runs. I've wondered how good the original paint really was. Meaning, the paint had faded away over the years or simply fell off and they repainted it red. I've just haven't been able to locate any gray paint on the tractor anywhere but I did find a small flake of a really dark gray on the bottom side of the motor. I've wondered if the gray paint was actually old grease that was painted over with red. A search of the Wisconsin Historical Society records indicate that IH would paint a color to the buyers needs. I've often figured that meant construction companies. Just makes you wonder if the old F-20 was painted red from the factory to see what they would look like and help decide on the color change.

Nebraska thanks for the red primer paint information. Where did you get that information if you don't mind me asking. You've taken apart many more of those on beasts then I have. I haven't taken another F-series tractor apart with the older gray paint to see if the interior was red or not.

Do you know when your tractor was made? I was doing research a couple years ago and found a article that states All tractors produced after November 1, 1936 were to be painted Red.

Sprout,Last year at this time I was getting a 1936 F-20 ready to paint also.I had it completely torn down and found no sign of gray paint on it anywhere. It had been repainted red over red sometime in the 70's.The frame rails were red on the inside, even where they bolted to the transmission and front bolster, which were also red.(not solid red,but more runs and over spray)I know that the tractor wasn't disassembled in the 70's to be repainted and I doubt that it had been if it was painted earlier in it's life.I can't remember the exact serial # ,But it seems it would have been mid-year production for 1936.John.

I'm sure you are both aware in 36 they switched from grey to red so it could be either color? I had both a grey one and a red one once.

yup jim, it was a real dark grey, the insides of the castings were painted with a special red sealer. Lots of those tracors were repainted red years ago to make them appear more modern. In fact it is rare to find one that has not been repainted.
