There is a nice little 340 in Harlan, Iowa at an equipment dealer. I had never seen one, are they kind of rare or no? Did it have a TA and could you put a fast hitch on one? Looked like an H with 60 series styling, is this correct? Thanks.

I have a very early 1958 FARMALL 340 with power steering and fast hitch. It has tricycle front and fenders. It is a very nice tractor to use for raking or tine weeding. The gas motor is a little underppowered in my opinion . I think the diesel version is a bit more rare with the 188 cuin. motor. I also have a fast hitch plow to use at plow days and it seems to like that job also. Looks like a baby brother to the 460 with the same design grill and hoods. Pretty good little piece of iron.

went by that 340 today,it's got a t/a and 2pt fast hitch with 3pt adapter arms and top link bracket, just needs the top link and your set, they probably took it inside to keep it from walking off.

As for what previous tractors the 340 is based on, it is a 200/SuperC series front and motor spliced to the back half of a 350 (the 350 in turn derived from the H). The 340 is the very first IH tractor with combined hydraulic/tranny fluid (Hy-Tran). (340 release beat the 460/560 by a few months.)

They were made from 1958--1963. I have been told that production was around 7,500 units. A TA & fast-hitch were options. They are a very handy little tractor.

They made them from 58-61 I believe. I dont think they are rare but they did not make them as long as they made the letter series so there are not as many. I have not had to much of a problem finding parts.

We had one of the little Farmalls with factory WFE and an IH bucket loader, fast hitch, ps, IPTO, and TA. Sometimes the TA would last through an entire season. Used it mostly for moving wagons and light lifting work. I seriously regret letting that one go - rare. I agree with the earlier poster who suggested that it might have been underpowered. It never seemed up to the 300U. Cold starting as well.
