Hello, I have spent the last week looking through the site to find info on wiring my super c to 12 volts. Lots of good info. I used the wiring diagrams to wire it up. I have tried a 35 mA LED, 1 100mA light and 2 100mA lights as warning lights. All with no success. So I had my alternator tested and it was bad. So i replaced it. Still no go. I know the tractor spins it fast enough because at one time the other alternator worked before it fried. I am using a Delco alternator w/ 3 wires. My ammeter is working. The lights come on but never shut off. It has a key type ignition w/ a remote solenoid for the starter. Any suggestions to help me would be great. My second question is my tractor starts and runs for a minute or two but never even warms up. Had the coil tested and it is fine. point and condesor also seem fine. any help?
Thanks in advance.

Bob's advice below is right on! A couple added notes:

1 - The best place to stick your voltmeter to determine whether the alternator is working is directly across the battery posts.

2 - Unlike generators, alternators are extremely susceptible to damage from open/short circuits while in operation. Never, NEVER disconnect a battery cable, remove a warning light, pull the aux wiring plug etc. with the engine running!

On yours there's a good chance you toasted the internal regulator or something, thus the problems you are now having.

Regarding the engine quitting after a couple minutes of running, when it does it again immediately pull a plug wire and crank the engine to determine if it's still getting spark. If no spark, look for a bad ballast resistor. This is a fairly common failure with them (resistor goes open circuit when after it heats up...).

However if you find you still have spark be looking for a fuel starvation problem.

Good luck!

Put your volt meter leads on the battery posts and
run the engine at 1/2 throttle or above. The volt meter should read between 13.5 to 14.5 volts
with the engine running. If you have voltage readings in these areas, your alternator is ok.
You may need to check that ballast resistor to be sure it isn't defective. Hal

#1.) Use a #194 bulb for an "idiot light". That is what the Delco alternator was designed to work with in it's original application..

Higher wattage lamp = backfeed to ignition, and trouble shutting off engine.

Lower wattage lamp = alternator may not "excite" at slow speed, and light may glow when it shouldn't.

#2.) STOP UNHOOKING THE BATTERY WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, unless you like "killing" your alternator.

That shade-tree mechanic's trick to check if a GENERATOR was charging is NOT ADVISABLE with a solid-state alternator.

Use a VOLTMETER to verify the alternator is putting out over 14 Volts and under 15 Volts.

Thanks for your help. It looks like I should stop disconnecting the battery. Sounds kinda dumb on my part. It looks like the next step is to get a different bulb. Back to town again. Thanks again. Also with the alternator working the tractor's dying problem seems to be solved.

COWBOY, GO SEE DELL IN THE FORD 9N 8N 2N SITE
HE MIGHT HELP
I DID MY SUPER A THE WAY THE SITE SAYS AND IT WORKS GOOD
I THINK YOUR PROBLEM IS IN THE KEY SILANOID SETUP
TO CHECK ALT OUTPUT PUT TESTER ON THE BIG POST AT BACK OF ALT (WITH NUT)

Make sure you are using a Negative Ground. Step the coil and points down to 6 volts using a resistor. Double check to make sure the coil wires are correct (Reverse them if you are switching from a positive to negative ground). Just a few things I learned the hard way.

It has been changed to neg ground and has a ballast resistor. All is well with that. I just tried something different with the alternator wiring by taking out the lights. with the lights removed the engine continues to run with the battery disconnected. So it must be running off the alternator which means that it is working. but by adding the lights it causes it not to work. Also with the alternator working it also seems to run longer with out dying. I dont know how it works and cannot find a reading using a voltmeter to show that the alt is working but it seems to be.

Quit disconnecting the battery with the engine running!

Sheesh, you must really enjoy shooting yourself in the foot over and over and over....

I did this conversion over the last month and had problems with my lights. My lights are hooked to the acc part of the key and I had to change the actual light switch it was bad. My ignition/key was also bad and had to be replaced. Put your voltmeter on every connection and see if there are problems..
