Got it out and all torn down and starting into the cleaning process and o-ring id's. Got all the orings figured out except for 4. All literature I and the dealer have shows 2 o-rings that I think can be identified in the breakdown on the new style block. What I have left over is 2 tan o-rings, same size. I think they go behind the connecting rod yoke that gets bolted down on the main rockshaft pistons. They show them on the newer style breakdown at the dealer but not on the old in the service manual from binder. And the breakdown at the dealer doesnt exclude them from the old style block like it does on other parts in the notes. Is it worth tearing the conn rods down for a look? Does anyone know if there are o-rings between the yoke and piston on the old style units?

The other 2 are black, one small, one large and there is only 1 of eack in the kit. Cant find a home for these anywhere at all.

Also the bores where the front and rear check valve bushings reside are discolored in places, a light tan. Dont know what caused this, heat??. Should I clean them up with crocus? Or leave them alone, they feel smooth.

Do you think it would be alright to use silicone or hi tack and the gasket on the bottom cover.

Sorry to be long winded, just want to get it right the first time.

Thank You, scott#2

scott, One more thing, you want to disassemble the pump. The driven pump shaft has an o-ring on it also, if that shaft is worn much were the o-ring is located, that will allow hydraulic fluid to pass by it entering the motor through the timing cover.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I found out where those other 4 orings go. The 2 tan ones go under the late model high pressure pistons before bolting them to the rods. Not used on the early units as those shafts are tapered. The other 2 that are supplied as 1 each, I believe go into the optional remote hyd. control valve. I think that anyone who has completly redone an early block without the optional remote would have 8 rings left over. It makes sence since they give you every thing from the block to the pump. The optional hyd. valve is in between. Not going to mess with that at this time

Thanks for all the comments, I am keeping all of them in mind as I go through this thing.

I appreciate the help you have given me in my previous posts. It's been nearly 3 years since I rebuilt the unit on my C, and since I suffer from CRS, I can't answer all your questions. When I go to the trouble to remove a unit from a tractor, it gets totally disassembled and rebuilt. As you have found, there is more than one version of that block, but the kit has parts for all of them, so there will be parts left over. I would pull both the pistons and the smaller rods below them and replace any o-rings that are on them. If some o-rings were not in your kit, I believe they can be purchased from your dealer or elsewhere, I don't think there is anything special about them. I am currently looking at my parts manual, there is large a o-ring that fits on the piston, I would certainly replace that one. There are also 2 seals that fit on the barrel of the piston, again I don't remember what those look like, they were in the kit. I think they are about an inch in diameter, don't know if those are the ones you mean or not. There is also an o-ring on the lower control rod. I don't think the tan discoloration means much, but I don't remember it on mine. If it is smooth, I would leave it alone, rather than getting it too rough resulting in possible damage. I don't think I used any sealer on the gasket on mine, because I have heard horror stories about silicone and hydraulics. If you use sealer, I would just use the copper spray stuff, and try not to squeeze it into the inside of the unit. Mine does not have bottom cover, only the head comes off. I thought there were torque specs for the bolts, but I can't seem to find them. Hope this helps.

scott, # 1 When I rebuilt mine I had the tan o-rings left over as I recall.

#2 If the bores are smooth and the bore size is uniform I wouldnt do anything.

#3 I used the permatex sealant in the can with the brush applicator on the bottom plate and the front cylinder head, just allow it to get tacky before reassambly.

#4 After I had torn the whole unit down, I brought the block into work and let it sit in the cleaning tank for a day and then blew out all the passage ways with high pressure. This also loosened all the old gasket material so that it was easy to clean off.
