Electric Start on my F-14

I have a late 1939 F-14 that is set up with a starter and generator. It all looks to be original. How many F-14's were set up like this? Is this a rare tractor? I also need the 40" rubber for the rear if anyone knows where I can find a set. Thanks Again!

The electric starter was available for the F12 and F14. The parts are all in the parts books. I have never seen a complete one on a tractor yet so in my world they are quite rare, but wide front ends are rare too and I have one on my 12 and know of two others in my area. The F20 is the one that never had a factoy electric start.

You are correct and I stand corrected. I totally forgot that the F-12 and F-14 actually had factory electric start. I keep thinking of the bigger ones. Thanks.

If I'm correct, IH never made an electric start for the F-series. Guy Fay and many others have searched with no luck finding such records suggesting that IH produced such a thing. However, several after market companies produced electric start for those tractors I know for sure in the 1940's (Maybe late 1930's but I have no proof). I wouldn't say they are rare but you sure don't see them to often. The electric start option was not cheap back in the day and many farmers just waited and bought the M's and H's of the day which included many more options. IH did produce lights and generators for the F-series.

The F14 parts book list it as optional.Doesnt say if IH made it or bought it.

Hello Rob,

A few years ago before I bought this tractor I was told that none of the F Series tractors had electric start from the factory.

You can see the starter on my F-20 just below the left frame rail. Is that how your F-14 is set up?

Thanks for the picture. That is a very nice F-20 may I add! My F-14 is set up differently. The starter is on the other side of the tractor. There is actually an inlet in the bellhousing that looks like was casted that way from the factory. I have a picture that I can e-mail you if you're interested. Thanks Again!

Sure I would like to see a picture of your F-14.

The starter on my F-20 is an after market unit. Still uses the mag, and has no generator. With the 12 volt battery it is very easy to start and we just put a battery charger on the battery a few times a year.

I will trade you even a set of rear rubber 40" for the electric start and pay all the shipping!The tires are new,the rims need a little work and the hubs are included!

You can put electric start on any F-14 (assuming it has a PTO) by using the PTO. Jury rig a flywheel and starter from the auto salvage yard to the PTO. Mount the stuff in a box on the drawbar. Make sure rotation is correct. You put PTO in gear, tractor in neutral and crank her up. I've seen this a couple of times at shows, and a friend has an F-14 so equipped.
