I am going to replace the pistons, sleeves, cam, lifters, also the rod, main, and cam bearings in my 460U (not much left). A machine shop will do the head, will ask him about the valve springs, etc. Have looked at this site, tlib-ulav (backwards) and Bates. Turns out that Bates and this site sell many of the same products--many part numbers are the same, some not. This site is cheaper. I have been hesitant to purchase from this site because I don't know who the manufacturer is, or the others for that matter. I also did a search for Tisco, entered a zip code and my local Case-IH dealer was listed. Don't know if Tisco makes Case-IH parts, or if the local dealer sells a separate line, will have to ask. Has anyone had any experience with these suppliers, or are there others? I have found a few more, most with an incomplete stock of parts. I don't want to install junk, but don't want to pay an arm and a leg either. I'm aware of the "you get what you pay for" thing, just looking for ideas.

From experience...The sponsor at this website Alpha Tractors has courteous sales people and quick shipping of quality parts with great prices!. The IH engine kits they sell are TISCO brand.

Thanks for everyone's help. I checked with my local Case-IH dealer, turns out that he sells Tisco for most rebuild kits. Prices seem to be ballpark with Bates, Abilene machine, etc, perhaps a little higher, but I will buy locally if the price is similar. So my local dealer is probably the answer, after all. The crank, block, and head are going to a local machine shop, who will do the head work, hot tank the block and install the sleeves and cam bearings. The machine shop is part of an auto parts store, who can also get the parts. Will wait and see what the machinist recommends. I wanted to check other places first before I took the block to him. Now I think I have a pretty good idea of price and quality, which is what I was after.

Have sold and used a lot of Tisco rebuild kits with very good luck, everything looks top nothc and seem to be good products.

I can tell you firsthand that bates can give you several options on you engine rebuilds. To name the suppliers at the top of my head:Tisco/Case-IH/howard(red power?)/sparex/federal-mogul/clevite. By far tisco is what they move the most due to best value for quality. Very few problems that I am aware of.

Is your cam too far gone to regrind ? The one from the H had a few thousandths worn off the lobes. It was reground from .202" lift to .240" and I had no problems with getting the valves adjusted. It has not run for 60 years yet, so I can not vouch for durability. Lifters can be refaced also, if they are not too worn.

Probably, but by the prices I have seen for reground ones, I imagine the regrind will cost more -- will ask the machinist.

My local auto parts store orders Farmall parts from Tisco. 2 day pick up at the auto parts store and good quality so far and prices well below CaseIH dealer. CaseIH won't offer service that quick, generally a week or ten days. ugly

That was my question, I believe, whether or not the Tisco and Case-IH parts were the same. The local dealer has either overnight or 1-2 day service on most IH parts. Two day only if he has to go farther than the dist center in Kansas City.

The man that owns the local tractor repair shop gets all of his engine kits thru Abilene Machine. He says they use the same parts manufacturer that CNH uses and he has never had a problem. He says they have the best prices anywears. I looked up a kit for my SC and they have the lowest price I've found.

Scott-Have ordered used parts from Abilene before, neither their catalog or website listed what I want, so I called. They have an engine kit including pistons, sleeves, bearings, etc for $571. Either Federal Mogul or Clevite (subsidiary) is the manufacturer. Sounds like a possibility -- Thanks.

I have purchased something from about every vendor out there in the past month plus,and have had pretty good service from all of them.I find this website too has a good shipping system and I would recommend them as well.

Paul, in the past I have read that some people have had problems getting parts from this site, which is why I have never tried (been reading this forum for maybe 6 years). From the responses recently, I might give them a try. Perhaps they have their act together now. Thanks.

I rebuilt my Super C with Tisco with no problems,but check prices. The same parts the same brand were 75.00 cheaper from my local auto parts store than the online stores I checked with, and no freight!

I have bought from the Valu place also and have had good luck. I bought a M steering coupler,MF water pump and pully, shifter knobs and other parts. I am pleased with my parts.

Thanks, their website says they don't sell to individuals. Might try NAPA, but I have to be sure I get the owner or someone at the local store that understands what I want.

I've done lots of purchasing through the first site you mention. (For the record, I've also bought a fair amount of stuff through the storefront associated with ytmag, so I try to be an equal opportunity buyer ;-) So far, I haven't had a single problem. Actually, that's not true. Once, I got the wrong part in my order...one phone call and they sent the correct one no problem. I also like the web site -- I can check the status of my order anytime, including getting the tracking numbers and such. Quality of the parts seems ok to me.

Bought piston and rings from Bates for my Farmall cub. Nice quality stuff. All other parts Case/IH original parts.No problems.Whats that old commercial from Fram oil filters. You can pay me now or you can pay me later.Try to keep everything OEM.I learned my lesson.What worked good 50 years ago still works good today.

very few OEM companies cast their own parts anymore. Most piston rings are hastings, TRW, or someone like that, bearings are clevite or federal-mogal, seals are CR, bearings are?? pistons canbe about anyone. So, unless you are talking about filter, and things like that, OEM does not have the quality you would expect for the price you are paying. One aftermarket company I deal with has 1 year warranty, OEM has 90 days.

Not everything dealer is ducky...
Most american car companies oil filters (AC,Mopar) are made by Champion Labs....you can buy "Champ" brand aftermarket filters (Parts Plus too) made by the same company for around $2.00.Just goes to show,once the dealers "big" name gets put on something...up goes the price.I hear Mopar's u joints run around $80.00 each....but they are just Spicer/Neapco/Precision made joints (dont know which one)which one can buy for less than $20.00 over the counter at a parts store.This is why most car dealers wont buy "OEM" branded parts and purchase them from NAPA,Car Quest,Parts Plus,AutoValue...etc.They usually get the same part for a lot less.

You will love this one, Kohler filter used to be made by Champ labs, now they are made in India, and they call that OEM. In all seriousness, some of the quote OEM filters are better, the filtering media is a lot heavier and denser, so the filter is one place where I do not go with aftermarket, I have seen too many aftermarket filters cut open and you will see what I have seen. It is kinda scary

I have found that WIX filters are among the best...however,I have one reservation.....the spin on filter used on 300 conversions.Their filter base is scary! There is one pin prick hole in the center and one pin prick hole around the perimeter...that is all to allow oil flow,just those pin pricks! The CASE/IH filter looks like a regular car one,with fully open threaded hole and multiple small round holes around it.The WIX filter looks to me like it would starve the engine of oil.Its listed for many pieces of equipment...but frankly I wouldnt use it.I hate to spend $8.00 for the genuine article (plus shipping),but piece of mind is priceless.

For $8.00 for OEM, that is pretty reasonable. I guess me being in the parts business I do not have the sticker shock most people do. The fuel filter for my truck the other night at O'Reilly auto parts was $18.00, was a Wix filter I think, that is crazy. And it was not very big in size either.

I'm in the parts biz myself,and as I can buy wholesale I consider $8.00+ shipping expensive as compared to $3-4 with no shipping.
However,I like the CASE/IH filter....it looks like a regular car filter,well made.I'm guessing but probably FleetGard makes it(???).

paul i don't think that you understand the oil system in your 300. there is only a small portion of the oil that goes through the filter, this is why i think that good oil pressure is important on working tractors. the oil filter base is attached to the side of the block and a 3/8" hole from the oil gallery feeds the filter housing and the oil is pushed through that little bitty hole in the side of the bolt that holds the filter canister on. that is all the oil that gets filtered is what the oil preesure pushes through that little hole, the rest goes straight from the pump to the bearings.

I'm sure that the suppliers used in the 1950s are not the same ones they are using today.It happens with cars and everything else.One supplier makes the OEM factory assembly line parts and another makes the OEM replacements.In some cases the parts dont even look the same.Try to restore an old musclecar and insist on genuine GM/Ford/Mopar parts...and you'll be disapointed...they are modern parts and not copies of the vintage stuff.
Dont know where CASE gets their stuff from,but I just hope its good quality and under tight guidelines.....to keep that IH legacy alive and well...

To clarify....when I stated OEM parts I wasnt referring to the online source called "OEM" but the abreviation for Original Equipment Manufacturer....as in genuine OEM Maytag parts,Genuine OEM Lawn Boy,Genuine OEM Hoover (ETC,ETC).
I hope I didnt confuse anyone on that point.
