3 Super C Questions

Hi while I am waiting for my Super C manuels to get to me and have one more day of fairly warm weather forecast I am hoping you all could answer 3 questions I have. 1- Does the rear light have a switch on it? I see a round thing there on the outside but it doesn't move, would it turn or pull out? Seems to be power go that far but none out of it to the light bulb. 2- I am running a 12 volt battery with the generator. It is putting out about 13.5 volts charging which I know is a bit low. Have changed bulbs to 12 volts front lights work great. Will this affect the points any? Have read that it won't do any harm might just have to change points more often. Will it do harm or not? Tractor starts and runs great. Want to do the 12 volt conversion this summer so don't want to buy a 6 volt battery for a few months use. 3- I am making a harness for an 8ft. front blade to attach to. Will this pick up a 8ft. about 300lb. blade? If it does and I leave the blade off the ground while parked in the garage will it hurt anything? Be hard on pump or any internal parts? I would like to keep blade off of ground because the garage is attached to the house and in winter would like to get tractor out fairly quickly not have to wait for hydrolics to warm up to pick up blade. Sorry for the long post figured one long one would be better then a few short threads. Thanks Terryj

For many years I used a heavy front blade on my "C" and found it was a bit heavy so I rigged up an assist spring on each side of the tractor. The springs must have lifted about half of the blade's weight. Good Luck, Ken

Terry, Like TDK said, you need to put in a resistor if you are going to keep the 6-volt coil. You don�t need to put it near the coil however, just so that it is in line to the coil somewhere. I like to wire mine in for a 12 volt start/6-volt run if possible. To do that I take the wire from the switch and hook it to one side of the resistor, and the wire going to the coil to the other side of the resistor (juts like TDK said). Now to add the 12-volt start, you need either a solenoid or a special switch on the starter (when you use a pull rod like on a C) that has a small terminal on the side of the switch. This switch is available at parts stores like NAPA. This terminal provides a 12 volt source only while the starter is operating. Run a wire from this terminal on the starter switch to the COIL side of the resistor, in effect bypassing the resistor on startup. I do this for two reasons. The first being the voltage drop when starting (the resistor drops voltage to � of input, so if you have voltage drop to 9 volts due to dirty batter cables etc during start, you will only get 4.5 to the coil). Second, the higher voltage will give a �hotter� spark during cranking aiding in starting especially if your plugs are gapped a little wide due to wear. IH actually did this on their early 12-volt tractors.

terry: You have very good advice from FC and TDK, so no point in me repeating all of that. My only point is one should never leave any hydraulically raised equipment in the raised position. It will prematurely cause damage to system, plus it's a bit dangerous.

I set my blade on two 6"x6" wooden blocks. Not for the reason you are suggesting as my shop is not connected to house. One just never knows when he may wish to tow the tractor out through the door. Our tractors are 50 years old by now.

1) If you have the rear light with the saftey red bulb inside you will have a two-position switch that twists. Knob will be a knurled metal or plastic one.
2) The 12 volts will burn the points up. It's debatable as to how long it'll take, but I did this on a car years ago and it only took about 20 minutes.Mount a resistor near the coil, attach wire that runs from switch - coil to one side of resistor. Make another wire to fasten on other post of resistor and to coil. You'll have to do this eventually anyway, if using 12 volts, may as well do it now. Resistor cost between 5 - 7 dollars.
3) You shouldn't have any trouble with the hyd. in cold weather. Use IH Hy-Tran ONLY!

I can't answer any of your other questions, but the hydraulics normally work pretty well even when cold. It uses a lightweight hytran fluid that seems to flow well at low temps. Or at least this has been my experience with my C. I know some folks have put 30 wt. motor oil in them and that would cause some sluggishness when cold. If so I think I would change it to the hy-tran, and your hydraulics should go right to work as soon as it starts unless you have extreme temps.

terry 12 volt systems are designed to charge at a voltage 13.7 to 14.2 but that all depends on your battery or cble conditions. i wolud rig a chain so that you could hook it while in the garage to keep the blade off the floor and keep the pressure off the hydraulic system

Could I just change the coil to a 12 volt one with an internal resistor? Know thats what my dad put on his M with the 12 volt conversion. It has been going a few years between points. Not sure what difference would be with the M running an alternator and key switch though. Great idea I never thought of chaining up the blade. That will be setup while I finnish my blade harness.
