Does any one know where I could get new or good used steering gears for my 300 rowcrop. I love driving the old girl but she's quite spooky in road gear. Thanks in advance for any help

Hammer You can turn the gear but you don't have to go 180 degrees. What you want is good teeth when straight a head so 90 degrees might do it . Also the bushings and the bearing on the warm shaft could be bad rock the warm shaft back and forth and see what is moving and go from there.

If the 300 is like my farmalls there is a worm gear and a regular gear wheel. I took off the regular gear wheel and rotated it 180 so the worn gear rode on the unused side. Took out about 75% of the wiggle.

I was able to get an awful lot of slop out of the steering of my 400 by just opening the top of the bolster and getting the nut that holds the steering gear against the worm gear just a little tighter. Not enough to restrict movement, but it can help bring things back together.

Have you had it apart?

Most likely it is a bad worm gear bearing or loose upper bolster lower bearing.

Haven't had the lid off the top yet. But, the worm shaft bearing was good last summer when I rebushed the center steering shaft support which helped but didn't cure it.

I have a lot of play in the worm steering shaft at the center support. IH said they did not have new bushings for that. How/where did you get the support rebushed? Also the shaft is worn down at that point a lot . ANy way to repair that? Are new shafts available?

When I rebushed the center support on the 300 I measured the shaft size and the hole in the center support then went to the hardware store and bought bronze bushing to fit then drilled a hole in the bushing to line up with the grease fitting so it could be lubed and pressed it into the support. If memory serves me correctly the bushing measured 1 inch outside and 7/8 inch inside diameter. hope this helps

Jack up the front end and see whether you can move the front wheels sideways. If you can, the bearing right above the wheels is bad.

Hammerhead, You've probably all ready checked the steering knuckles as well as any power steering connections for sloppiness, right? Sometimes a lot of the wobble comes from a little looseness at several locations. My nickel Dick Davis
